New York - Almost all of the 436 mosques in the Central African Republic have been destroyed by months of vicious fighting between Christians and Muslims, the US ambassador to the United Nations said on Tuesday, calling the devastation "kind of crazy, chilling".

Samantha Power spoke to reporters after a Security Council visit last week to the country. She expressed concern about an upcoming possible security vacuum as European Union and French forces pull out and a UN peacekeeping force is still not at full strength.

At least 5 000 people have been killed since Central African Republic exploded into unprecedented sectarian violence in December 2013. Nearly 1 million of the Texas-sized country's 4.5 million residents have been displaced. Many of those who have fled are Muslim.

Power said 417 of the country's mosques have been destroyed. She visited the one remaining Muslim neighbourhood in the capital, Bangui, and described the residents as "a terrified population".

Some Muslim women, afraid of leaving the community while wearing their veils, are choosing to give birth in their homes instead of hospitals, the ambassador said.

UN peacekeepers, French forces and a European Union military operation have tried to calm the violence. But Power said the last of the EU force of about 750 troops left the Central African Republic over the weekend, shortly after the Security Council visit.

"That's a big drop-off in capability," she said. Meanwhile, the French forces have announced a "substantial drawdown" by the end of this year. France had sent 2 000 troops to its former colony.

The UN peacekeeping force remains at about 80% of its planned strength of about 10 000, Power said. The UN secretary-general last month asked for more than 1 000 additional peacekeepers, and Power said the council is "very favourably disposed" to the request.

She said the combined forces have "averted a worst-case scenario", but the country's roving armed groups remain armed.

The ambassador called that a deep cause for concern and said disarmament is a "huge priority".

good move. maybe the saudis will start a hypocritical howl. as long as the major gulf states do not allow freedom of religion, muslims in minority should be made to suffer. only an expat knows the pain of not being allowed to practice ones faith.

on the other hand muslims everywhere are ready to play victim when they are denied even the smallest of rights. religious bigotry at its best.

Are you trying to justify one injustice by the perpetration of another injustice ?

Humanity's going places at this rate....:disagree:

well, Islam should stand up for other religions cause. Then maybe others will feel like standing up for Islam's cause. Have you checked the meaning of the word hypocrite?

as ever, it is usa governments who always are more concerned about mosques rather than humans... usa governments have long used mosques to spread disorder in strong muslim societies.

take your hatred else.

What is hatred here? Quoting a news link?

It is very difficult to be at a place where the radicals are on loose.

you must make clear your opposition...

1. is it to bashar al-assad, leader of a socialism governed society.
2. is it to nato-sponsored qaeda/taliban/ikhwaan elements who are using mosques as attack bases.

I leave the analysis on you.
Isimply wanted to make the point that mosques are attached in big way in other places as well.

The real irony here goes thus :
A- Muslim minority overruns govt in a poor African county ; No 1 Cares!
B- France as ex_colonial power send 300-500 troops and calls African Union
which responds with meager means but does.
C- France asked the UN for a mandate to go in before it's too late as Muslim
rebels kill Christians and chaos sees those fight back with civil war looming.
D- UN tergiversates for months and rest of world : No 1 cares!
E- France goes in at last with mandate; clears the Seleka rebels and immediately
has to fight and control hordes of half-wit half demented pseudo-Christian animists
hell-bent on revenge. We fought those more than the Muslims that found refuge in …
churches in a few cases.
F- 5 months late : EU troops arrive on the heels of their deployment to Mali to replace …
guess who? Their mission? Safeguard the airport so French troops can go deeper.
G- 7-8 months late : UN mission arrives.
H- Hell has moved to Muslim majority's North-East and they flee to neighbouring lands.
No 1 cares!
I- The capital being calm EU troops announce withdrawal. UN mission still can't work
without French backing.
J- France announces scale-down.
K-The USA through one of its most cynical envoys wakes up and plays offended virgin.

Soon people will be caring.

SNAFU is the only proper term to convey my opinion of this mess.

Good day and a thought for CAR, Tay.
