DHAKA – Semi-durable houses for the Rohingyas and allowing them to join income-generating activities in Cox’s Bazar may curtail government costs for refugees, the US has suggested today.

Janine Wynne, deputy assistant secretary of state of the Bureau of Population, Refugee and Migration shared the idea during a meeting with Acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral (Rtd) Khurshed Alam and foreign ministry’s director general (Myanmar) Mia Md Mainul Kabir at the ministry today.

They discussed the challenges faced by the Rohingyas as well as host Bangladesh due to the declining global humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas.

Humanitarian agencies have appealed for more than $876m this year to support the Rohingya in Bangladesh. As of August 2023, the Joint Response Plan for supporting them was only 30 percent funded.

Early this year, food ration for each refugee was slashed to $8 from $12 a month.

A foreign ministry official told this correspondent that the UN has developed a plastic-made semi-durable housing model.
“Wynne said that type of housing could be cost-effective. We agreed to the spirit of the proposal, but said that the use of plastic would be hazardous for environment. Then she said we can be creative in how we do that,” said the official.

On the issue of involving Rohingyas in income-generating activities, the official said Bangladesh government is unlikely to agree to that proposal.

Janine Wynne said that the US has been the largest donor for the Rohingyas’ humanitarian assistance and will continue to provide the support.

“We said we want Rohingya repatriation because that is the ultimate solution. She said the repatriation should be sustainable,” the foreign ministry official said.

Americans should answer what are the income generating jobs available in excess in BD.

Unavailability of jobs and income cause young BD people to go abroad.

If US is so concerned about Rohingyas maybe they should allow them visa free access to US.

A third world country with it's own massive population to take care of should allow Rohingyas to take up all the jobs so that it's own population stays unemployed.

BUt, you seem to be very ignorant about American role to support Rohingya refugees in BD. So far, it has donated $2 billion to the GoB for this purpose.

Did India donate even $1.00 so far?

Why should they, not my circus not my monkeys.
Why should we support Rohingyas when we have our own people to take care of.

Also if you think 2 billion is enough compensation for what Americans are asking for then good luck to you guys.

What pledges you are talking here? I am not talking about the money America pledged. $2 billion is a donation it has already made.

More to come, especially if BD agrees to this income generating thing. Money is not generated by counting the sea waves. Working places will require a huge investment.

This is why BD is able to give shelter and food to Rohingya. community in BD.

Yes, India has already learned after it sheltered Dalailama. China is knocking at its door. If a panicked India shelters Rohingya, China will certainly break down the Indian door and take over Arunachal.

After all, Burma is a good friend of China. China loves Burmese dictatorship.

One very big, factor. Look this goes for all, when a big player comes along there is almost never a single reason.

There is multi dimensional reasons, with one very big beneficial reason that befits the big player veiled behind the multi dimensional reasons presented .

Where light shines on a surface there is darkness behind it. Unless you are clear as glass.

US wants Bangladesh to keep the Rohingyas. They will Chuck a few billions with conditions attached.

They will then brag to Burma to gain their support.

US will claim they neutered the Rohingya issue for Burma.

Just like they tell Israelis they neutered Arabs to help them.

Burma will become US’ Israel in Asia.

BD trusts the USA and does not trust India an eternal enemy of mankind.

USA is the great Satan.

Country founded on slavery will burn in hell.
