All U.S. warships in Persian Gulf in range of Iran’s missiles: General

All U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf are within the range of Iran’s land-to-sea missiles, Major General Yahya Safavi said on Friday.

Safavi, who is the former commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, stated that Iran’s situation is very different than the situations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He went on to say that Iran has a 2000-kilometer coastline on the Persian Gulf and every U.S. warship in that body of water is within range of Iran’s missiles.

I believe the USS Harry Truman and USS Eisenhower are still waiting around there. So if Iran feels like they can attack two Nimitz class carriers they can certainly try.

With all their escorts, aircraft carriers are still, too a large extent, sitting ducks against co-ordinated assaults. Most military experts believe this.

A classic sucide run by iranians pilots have a good standing chance to sink an ACC. What disputes that why will shy away from going this???

Most military experts agree that a carrier battle group is a TARGET, big and easy to find, it is not however easy to hit or destroy ...

Carriers have escorts precicely for this reason. Anti sub and anti air ships always escort the carriers.

IF Iran fires said missiles on a Carrier Battle Group, two things will happen, first the launch will be detected relatively early on, second, if the volley is around 3-4 missiles, i doubt anyone will reach their target.

It'll take a volley of at least 16-24 missiles to saturate the battle group defences and get 1-4 missiles through the combined anti-ballistic defence of the battle group... and I doubt 1-4 missiles will sink a carrier... perhaps cause casualties enough to horrify some americans ...but sink a nimitz class carrier ?? Nope... no chance..

it'll take 100 iranian planes trying, for 2 to get through and hit the carrier... and that is if the iranians are lucky ... you want to sacrifice 98 pilots and planes to hit the carrier twice and not even sink her ?

Career group, being a large size is its stregth.Unlike 1-2 scattered warships, in a career group, there will be so many defences, radars and attacking options in one place, which will make it hard to breach.

any attack on aircraft carriers will be retaliated by nuclear attack on iran. then there will be another begging nation will be created

And there wont be any sources left for india to import cheap energy and dump their textiles!

These experts would probably say the same thing about a truck -- is a target.

 Stop...!!! Yer killing me...

True.

Riggghtttt

Some years back when I was still active a certain US carrier conducted joined exercises with us in a pelagic environment somewhere in the southeastern med.

1st Scenario we were Red, carrier was Blue,

From the begining of the exercise, the battle group was located in under 20', and engaged in under 35' by a mix of Corsairs, Falcons and M2000s

A relatively unknown fact is that the simulated assault was such a success (accompanied by certain photos, similar to the ones that Some Su-27 pilots possess, you may have heard of them) that a few of our pilots had a kind of ...party afterwards and for a few days.

I would never say that had the attack been real, the carrier would have sunk, or indeed critically damaged, , our AF doesn't have these kind of weapons in its arsenal, but the battle group was indeed reached, targeted and sim-assaulted... the exercise was very instructional to some of the US officers as we heard in the de-briefing...it was quite a proud moment for us especially with the kind of means used to achieve that....

so don't go laughing out loud so easily... . a battle group is big and easy to find... not easy to sink ...

This subject have been discussed before. Keywords search for you: USS Ranger + EMCON Alpha

If you have never experienced EMCON Alpha before, there are no descriptions for it.
