ISLAMABAD: Spurred by growing energy needs and steady depletion of producing hydrocarbon resources, government is also diverting resources to get hands on shale gas deposits in the country which are over 10,000 trillion cubic feet(TCF).

The public sector company-Oil and Gas Development Company Limited(OGDCL) and Pakistan Petroleum Company Limited(PPL) have been tasked to carry out a pilot project, drilling first Shale gas well in four months in a part of Sindh.

The project is being launched following a study conducted in cooperation with USAID, confirming availability of 10,159 trillion cubic feet (TCF) Shale gas and 2,323 billions of stock tank barrels (BSTB) Shale oil in place resources, across the country, says an official source.

Elaborating, the source said analysis of 124 wells were carried out including laboratory analysis on Shale Cores and Cuttings in the United States.

"The Shale gas is a new phenomena worldwide and so far only US Shales have been proved as commercially viable and Shale Gas Exploration and Production is capital extensive about 10 times higher than conventional oil and gas," the source observed.

However, the source added horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technology which was used for shale gas exploration, was available in the country and already being used for conventional and tight gas reservoirs.

The source also said the government had so far awarded 46 new petroleum exploration licenses, which was a record performance in the country's history.

During current tenure of the government, a record 227 wells had been drilled which resulted in 65 new oil and gas discoveries.

"Around 560 MMCFD of additional gas and 27,000 BOPD of oil have been injected in the system so far," he said adding that by virtue of these discoveries, so far over one TCF of gas and 16 million of barrels of new oil reserves had been added to the system.

For the first time in the country's history, "domestic oil production has touched the highest level of 100,698 BBL per day of oil on 7.12.2014."

Pakistan, he said, was a gas prone country and 48 percent of its energy mix requirements were met through indigenous gas supply.

Currently the country, he said, was producing 4.16 BCFD gas, which was not sufficient to meet the ever increasing demand. "There is a gap of around 2 BCF gas between the indigenous supply and constraint demand.

Good idea by the noonies
If Pak strikes huge oil and gas reserves
Then price of oil will fall to 25 USD a barrel and we could all save some money

shale gas will not be economical under low oil prices. we need technology and investment which is not going to happen

Investing in Shale gas & oil in current market is sureshot way to bankrupt yourself.Good work Pakistan.

but look at the other side, you will pay us those 25USDs which will be used to bring terror in your country

Shale oil need investment of 60-65 USDs. So you will lose 35-40 USDs per barrel you produce. Good way of bankrupting Pakistan.

As per reports, Pakistan is soon going to be a water deficient country due to paucity of infrastructure and mismanagement of its water resources. Thus.....

The millions of gallons of water used in fracking operations not only strain water resources, but end up as vast amounts of contaminated wastewater. Fracking has been reported as a suspect in polluted drinking water around the country. And methane -- a potent climate change pollutant -- leaks rampantly throughout the extraction, processing, and distribution of oil and gas.

So, is extraction of shale gas a good idea where Pakistan is concerned?

I doubt its always 60 USD regardless of where that work is being done.

Correct, it will lead to water contamination. No body is going to bring latest and environment friendly technology. Being a third world country ,MNC's will simply use cheap polluting mechanism to extract gas and run away , leaving the local population to fend for themselves.

As others have suggested its only profitable if the price goes above $60, if not it is a loss investment. Further given how geologically active the area is , no one knows what will happen later. If it makes the bedrock unstable then we can expect more quakes in the region.

After exploring the Gas PAK will definitely stop oil imports of similar volume, Local industry willl be established. more employments will generated, currency will circulate more with in the country.

We will still buy oil from Iran and House of Saud
I meant that international Brent Crude and NYMEX Crude will fall to 25 USD from 40 USD at present

posible if we are going under ground across the border to pull your oil lol
Man are you not happy selling oil to India ,you could earn 100 billion$ next door, you will get money we will get oil both happy
