Hey Jana.. Have you been to Chennai? I am from Chennai.
Very few , mostly men eat beef in road side shops. They never cook at home. Beef is more accepted in Kerala. More than the 'sacred' factor, people think beef is unhealthy and unclean ,how pork is for Muslims. Most of them don't know that it is actually considered scared, at least in Tamil Nadu.
Yes been to Chennai . I liked some dishes there though its very different food there. One dish was something called with the word mallai that was good but i still did not get what it was.
But i did not like the roti there it was small and costly very costly and i came to know wheat was a costly item there.
As far as unclean part about Beef is concerned i have NOT read it in Hindu holy texts or books as far as my study of these books is concerned it is not forbidden.
