Starting from the 1980s, based on a Chinese cargo plane Y-8 (a localized version of the Soviet An-12 production Shaanxi Aircraft Industry Corporation) and its radically improved version of Y-9 was created 19 different versions of special aircraft, including 11 types of aircraft series "Gaoxin" (GX, 高新) for the Air Force and Air Force PLA Navy. "Gaoxin" - a designation for the aircraft carriers of special electronic equipment, in this family include aircraft EW, AWACS, electronic intelligence, psychological warfare and basic patrol. Older types of patrol and other special aircraft, which were created in the 1980s - 1990s, as well as the test platform used in the aviation industry, this designation does not carry. Also, refer to "Gaoxin" have no special plane on the basis of other platforms, such as AWACS aircraft KJ-2000 and electronic reconnaissance aircraft based on the Tu-154 (Tu-154D).

GX-6 to boost China's anti-submarine capabilities

China's new GX-6 anti-submarine patrol aircraft appears to be ready for action, reports China's nationalist Global Times tabloid.

Citing leaked photos posted on a military forum, Global Times claims that the GX-6, which has been modified from the Y-8 medium-size medium-range transport aircraft produced by Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation, has recently begun supporting troops from the PLA's Naval Air Force.

In modern submarine warfare, anti-submarine platforms like surface vessels and submarines lack a distinct advantage, which is why aerial anti-submarine strategies, with their short response time and high speed and mobility, are most effective, the report said.

With its ability to cover a large area of the ocean, the GX-6 can greatly increase China's maritime security and can push the PLA's anti-submarine line up more than 1,000 kilometers, plus offer protection to the PLA's Navy's long-distance missions, Global Times added.

The introduction of the GX-6 could be raise concerns for countries locked in territorial disputes with China, such as Japan in the East China Sea and Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea.

Military expert Li Xiaojian told Global Tiems that modern submarines are much more difficult to detect because of their advanced speed, reduced noise and ability to remain submerged for longer. Accordingly, anti-submarine surveillance aircraft have become extremely important and the GX-6 will be able to help the PLA conduct maritime patrols and anti-submarine reconnaissance, as well as participate in various types of joint anti-submarine or anti-ship operations operations.

The addition of the GX-6 to the PLA Navy's arsenal has significance because it gives China its first fixed-wing anti-submarine patrol aircraft, Li said, but the plane still lags behind the US P-8 anti-submarine patrol aircraft in most major indicators, meaning that China must quickly start developing a new generation of jet-propelled anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

That's one really long tail! I don't know what purpose it serves. Some specific antenna?
