Algerian Fethi Nourine and his coach have been suspended for 10 years by the International Judo Federation (IJF) for withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics after the draw set him on course for a bout against an Israeli.

The 30-year-old was due to face Sudan's Mohamed Abdalrasool for his first bout in the men's 73kg class and a victory would have paired him with Israel's Tohar Butbul in the next round.

Nourine said his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible for him to compete against Butbul.

The Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew the accreditation for both Nourine and his coach Amar Benikhlef and sent them home from the Tokyo Games.

The IJF, which had temporarily suspended Nourine and Benikhlef, said the pair used the Games "as a platform for protest and promotion of political and religious propaganda", which breached its code of ethics and the Olympic Charter.

They are banned from all IJF events and activities through to July 23, 2031, though they can appeal their bans to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the statement said.

The incident was not the first time that Nourine had withdrawn from competition to avoid facing an Israeli opponent. He pulled out of the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo for the same reason.

Tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict flared again this year as confrontations in contested Jerusalem triggered cross-border clashes.

Why dont play against Israel ? It is just sport, no need to relate it to politics. Israel team will be happy if they can win the match without any fight.

Same as India connects cricket with their enmity against Pakistan.
So this is not that uncommon.

Algeria doesn't even recognize the existence of IsraHELL. How can you play against something that to you it doesn't even exist ?

the Algerian judoka had motivated his refusal to fight the Israeli judoka by invoking the same reason for which he was condemned, namely that the country represented by his opponent, Israel, does not respect the Charter of Olympism and, therefore, he would logically be ineligible for any participation in the Olympic Games and should under no circumstances be admitted. Fethi Nourine's posture therefore translates into the refusal to fight against a judoka representing a state that violates the Charter of Olympism, would legitimately preserve the spirit of the Charter of Olympism from any drift that would threaten its foundations.

When it comes to real person who makes Palestinian suffer, we are not compromising either, but here we talk about sport competition and if you dont play against Israel it means your player will lost the match without any fight

Netanyahu took 2-hour detour to avoid Indonesia en route to Australia

Same thing: When Israeli planes go to Morocco, they are never allowed to fly over Algeria.

When you play against someone you agree to give them respect and agree that they are worthy of going against you
