The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament kickstarted yesterday. This is arguably the 3 strongest regional tournament in the world after the UEFA European Championship and Copa América.
Only two Arab teams (Algeria and Tunisia) participate this time around after Morocco withdrew from hosting the tournament due to fear of ebola spreading.

The most successful team in Africa (Egypt) failed to quality and just like a former Asian giant KSA, they have struggled in recent years.

Ivory Coast are the favorites according to the bookmakers but I have Algeria as a dark horse. A cracking team that impressed a lot in the World Cup and qualified from the group stages and gave the eventual winners (Germany) a serious challenge.

The Arab teams have performed well historical in the Africa Cup of Nations with 11 wins in total out of 29 possible. Egypt is the most successful team overall in the ACN with 7 wins. Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Sudan have all won once each.

Algeria are in my eyes the second biggest favorites to win the tournament after Ivory Coast. They have a really strong team and play great football. They were a revelation in the World Cup. They have not been this good for decades.

Let's hope for the best for our Algerian brothers.

It's a shame that the tournament is not played in Morocco as originally planned though. No Morocco for this reason and this would have been a big advantage for all 3 Arab teams. Now they play in Equatorial Guinea in a tropical climate with very high humidity. I think that this will be to the advantage of Sub-Saharan African teams which are used to this climate.

Let us see.

well, I think it is smart to ask the CAF to postpone the tournament, Ebola was getting out of hand, somehow that didn't work with CAF and Morocco... I was thinking an Arab country would take over Morocco host, Algeria, Tunisia or Egypt, but I didn't really follow the whole thing through of how Morocco was punished and etc...

and for this tournament I'm going for Algeria :yahoo:
and for Tunisia I can't actually see them advancing :what:

I think that ebola is under control now or at least I hope so. Well, I feel sad for the Moroccan team because they qualified for the tournament as hosts and looked forward to playing in their homeland but then ebola came and then their football federation did not want to host the tournament.

Morocco have some really good players such as Benatia, Amirabat, Assaidi, Al-Kaddouri, Chamakh etc.

Well, I just hope that both Algeria and Tunisia do well. An Algeria-Tunisia final would be great.:yahoo:

Although I think that finally Ivory Coast will win. They have a strong team but we say this every ANC but then they flop. As usual against Misr but now they are not there so maybe they can win now.;)

Tunisia - Algeria final would be the best CAF final... and yes most of Arabs teams in Africa are the best teams in Africa and in the Arab world...
Egypt had its share in the competition, 3 times in row :cheesy:

where are the Egyptian members, do they have a say on this year's tournament?

Indeed. Algeria can win because I know their team more and they play some great football. I really cheered a lot for them in the World Cup and it was a shame that Germany defeated them. They could have drawn at least and taken it to penalties. There everything can happen due to players being nervous etc.

Yes nowadays they are. I tell you why this is. This is because many of the Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian etc. players have been born in France or the West or play for French, Dutch etc. teams. So they have an advantage. Anyway yet Egypt has historically been by far the strongest Arab nation, at least in Africa, and their players do almost not play in Europe outside of a few handful of players.

Also let's hope that Syria after the war will have some success in sports. It would make people happy I believe.

Egypt has not qualified so they boycott the tournament. Also Egyptian football has been hit hard since Mubarak was removed.

true, if Syria was in AFC that would have helped the people, I remember how Syrians felt strong when Syria won the West Asia championship in midst of war... Syria has great talents, however the team was فريق واسطات and the coach had no say in picking the player, rather it was the federation :hitwall:.. anyways I don't wanna get off topic...

I wish both Algeria and Tunisia best in this tournament...

Cote d'Ivoire got this, InshAllah!

I was a wild fan of Algeria in the WC then got depressed after Germany won as I wanted all the African teams to compete through the finals. Seeing their progress in the WC, I think Algeria would win.

Tunisia, not even close, m3lesh MarineCorps. Also, the Ivory coach was Tunis - Sabri Lamouchi until after the WC.:)

Tunisia defeated Zambia (winners in 2012) 2-1. All those insults against Arab teams be they in Asia or Africa have really backfired the Ajam (LOL). Now we have both Iraq and UAE in the semifinal of the AFC. UAE defeated the defending champions Japan while Iraq defeated Iran.

:smitten:

Insha'Allah we will see an Algeria-Tunisia final in the ANC and a Iraq-UAE final in the AFC.:D

Currently Ghana and Algeria are playing. 0-0 so far. Ghana is a very strong team in Africa. One of the strongest.

Unfortuantely Ghana won 0-1 in the injury time. Typical. A draw or win against Senegal is enough to advance though. Should be possible.

Algeria is in a tough position... best of luck to Algeria!
