LoL a floating restaurant with antisubmarine capabilities . But i am sure that PN has some plans, as they wouldn't go for these 3 decade old frigates if they didn't consider this deal as a lucrative one, who knows Pakistan will integrate Chinese or European defense systems

Also as the article states this frigate in its stock condition would still be good for patroling and anti sub-marine role. At a bargain price !!!!

Remember couple of years ago when PAF was inducting old block 15 F-16s and most of us (excluding me) were criticizing PAF decision of inducting old planes. But it was all proven wrong when PAF decided to upgrade them to block 52 standard.
Same will be done to these frigates after they are given intensive refurbishments.

The role is very important. If the ships are being considered for ASW in PN, it makes sense to spend as much as possible on the American ASW package and not on missiles. The ships will continue to have their CIWS. I am pretty sure that will get some air defence SAM's in future (maybe chinese if not american?).

It is common practice to have ships for specific roles being fitted with specific weapons to provide for greater numbers. IN ASW program (P-28's) are not going to have any long range SAM's or even SSM's. This would allow for a fast and nimble ship which can perform excellent ASW ops (thanks to more space for ASW weapons and less displacement)! Moreover, wide area AAW cover can be provided by AAW assets like the P-15A's!

It is thus important to understand the whole picture. AFAIK, the standard missiles cost in millions. I would presume that PN might be looking at dedicated AAW platforms (like type 54's) and thus 8 perry's with ASW suite alone make a ton of sense to me!

Well I think thanks is due to US for their support

reality is our Navy is just in horrible condition its just makes our navy 'some what' capable for defensive needs

8 Ships from China , and If we get 5-6 ships from US it will make our naval defence some what decent

I think what we really do need to improve is the situation in Afghanistan quickly in 1-2 years

Becasue its effecting our economy

I am personally looking forward for the Chinese frigates with Air defence capabilities , the US ships would be ideal support for the fleet from naval fleets

rightly said.. we don't have much money to waste on this 78*8=624 millions dollar deal just for anti sub missions... in the same price we can buy 4 more brand new multi role f22p frigates, so why waste money... chinese type 054 is another option.... i don't know when we will come out of this love affair with american weapons

Trust your naval planners more. I'm sure they are aware of the situation.

Right now the Naval fleet is a sitting duck , its actually been planned o keep our navies toothless by forign nations

We also have no transport crafts to move our troops in a more global conflict at world war level which is real possibilties

Ideally we should have capabilities to move 40,000-50,000 troops from African west coast to Japan at anytime.

Similarly we need Ships that can defend vs Airborne threats like planes, and missiles becasue you move in large quantities of troops
via ships as well.

Strategically , we should have bases in following countries

Libya , 12 JF17 thunders , 30 tanks Missile sheild
2,000 Troops --> In return of Oil & Trade

Saudia , Jeddah , 12 JF-17 thunder , 20 Tanks Missil sheild
2,000 troops --> In return protection from Israel

Iran/Turkey 12 JF17 thunder , 20 tanks missile sheild
2,000 troops --> In return Technology cooperation

Indonesia 12 JF17 thunder , 20 tanks missile sheild
2,000 troops --> in return Trade

Lebnoon 10 JF17 Thunder, 20 tanks missile sheild 2,000 troops
in return --> better standing in Arab world and keep and eye on Israel's provokations

Pakistan has to take lead in Muslim world and we need to offer security contracts to protect the nations from accidental wars by providing security in return for cheap discounts on oil and cooperation in army

I think we need to show that we are part of international community and representativ of 1/4 of world muslim population ...

I think we need to change the preception of Pakistan from being obident to being a Leader

I think its pretty obvious since Pakistan is getting these refurbished frigates for free then the least Pakistan can do is buy a good defense system which wont be that difficult considering they paid around 180 million US dollars for F-22P.

Beg to differ with this remark. Ability of the Navy to keep sea lanes clear in case of war to a very large extent depends upon having efficient anti submarine and anti mine warfare assets.

India has a large submarine fleet soon to be augmented with a nuclear submarine as well. How are we going to effectively combat submarine challenge without anti sub frigates?

IMO some comments in this thread are simply based on anti US sentiment and not on cold logic. Pak Navy is endeavoring to make best use of the limited sources available to the country and you call it a waste!

Anyone remember the shape in which we got the Type 21's? They were practically bare shells. Did not even have a ASW capability that one can speak of. PN later on added various weapons systems like Phalanx, Harpoons etc.

The FFG-7 buy is also along the same lines but with a more advanced ASW capability, CIWS, & capability to abosrb/add further weapon systems.
