If it were in a position to do so, Al Qaeda would use Pakistan's nuclear weapons in its fight against the United States, a top leader of the group said in remarks aired on Sunday.

Pakistan has been battling al Qaeda's Taliban allies in the Swat Valley since April after their thrust into a district 100 km (60 miles) northwest of the capital raised fears the nuclear-armed country could slowly slip into militant hands.

"God willing, the nuclear weapons will not fall into the hands of the Americans and the mujahideen would take them and use them against the Americans," Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, the leader of al Qaeda's in Afghanistan, said in an interview with Al Jazeera television.

Abu al-Yazid was responding to a question about U.S. safeguards to seize control over Pakistan's nuclear weapons in case Islamist fighters came close to doing so.

"We expect that the Pakistani army would be defeated (in Swat) ... and that would be its end everywhere, God willing."

Asked about the group's plans, the Egyptian militant leader said: "The strategy of the (al Qaeda) organisation in the coming period is the same as in the previous period: to hit the head of the snake, the head of tyranny -- the United States.

"That can be achieved through continued work on the open fronts and also by opening new fronts in a manner that achieves the interests of Islam and Muslims and by increasing military operations that drain the enemy financially."

The militant leader suggested that naming a new leader for the group's unit in the Arabian Peninsula, Abu Basir al-Wahayshi, could revive its campaign in Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter.

"Our goals have been the Americans ... and the oil targets which they are stealing to gain power to strike the mujahideen and Muslims."

"There was a setback in work there for reasons that there is no room to state now, but as of late, efforts have been united and there is unity around a single leader."

Abu al-Yazid, also known as Abu Saeed al-Masri, said al Qaeda will continue "with large scale operations against the enemy" -- by which he meant the United States.

"We have demanded and we demand that all branches of al Qaeda carry out such operations," he said, referring to attacks against U.S.-led forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The militant leader said al Qaeda would be willing to accept a truce of about 10 years' duration with the United States if Washington agreed to withdraw its troops from Muslim countries and stopped backing Israel and the pro-Western governments of Muslim nations.

Asked about the whereabouts of al Qaeda's top leaders, he said: "Praise God, sheikh Osama (bin Laden) and sheikh Ayman al-Zawahri are safe from the reach of the enemies, but we would not say where they are; moreover, we do not know where they are, but we're in continuous contact with them.

This is got to be the joke of the century. What Abu al-Yazid forget is that even if we imagine the chance (and that would be one in a million) about nukes getting into the hands of AQ, he cannot operate them. There statements actually reflect how weak and pathetic they have become and have now restorted to propaganda. Wake up call Pakistani nukes are not lying on a friday market where one would go and get one.

Exactly IceC! And how would the USA get hold of them to "safe guard" them? Jeez, it's not like we can walk in and take them any easier than Al Qaeda could. Pakistan's Armed Forces has them secure. We Americans hope Pakistan never has to use them, but the idea that AQ can get to them or operate them is ludicrous.

sheikh Osama (bin Laden) and sheikh Ayman al-Zawahri are safe from the reach of the enemies

If they had any chance in hell of acquiring a nuke they wouldn't openly talk like that. It just seems these Al Qaeda are a wing of a completely different organisation and say exactly what's dictated to them. Coincidently the same load of garbage the western media is dictating.

These statements would never do their own cause any favours and clearly suggest that they are acting on others behalf. They also seem very confident that such statements would hurt Pakistan more than themselves, so someone is looking out for them.

Desperate attempt to get attention. They are running away like cowards to Somalia and Yemen. If they have balls they should stay in Waziristan and face whats going to be coming soon.

These days buying nukes from enemies of US(North korea,Iran) is not big deal .Al Qaeda may have plan to aquire the weapon of mass distructions.

SYDNEY, Australia — Usama bin Laden's (search) terror network claims to have bought ready-made nuclear weapons on the black market in central Asia, the biographer of Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader was quoted as telling an Australian television station.

In an interview scheduled to be televised on Monday, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir said Ayman al-Zawahiri (search) claimed that "smart briefcase bombs" were available on the black market.

It was not clear when the interview between Mir and al-Zawahiri took place.

U.S. intelligence agencies have long believed that Al Qaeda (search) attempted to acquire a nuclear device on the black market, but say there is no evidence it was successful.

In the interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp. television, parts of which were released Sunday, Mir recalled telling al-Zawahiri it was difficult to believe that Al Qaeda had nuclear weapons when the terror network didn't have the equipment to maintain or use them.

"Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri laughed and he said 'Mr. Mir, if you have $30 million, go to the black market in central Asia, contact any disgruntled Soviet scientist, and a lot of ... smart briefcase bombs are available,'" Mir said in the interview.

"They have contacted us, we sent our people to Moscow, to Tashkent, to other central Asian states and they negotiated, and we purchased some suitcase bombs," Mir quoted al-Zawahiri as saying.

Al-Qaeda has never hidden its interest in acquiring nuclear weapons.

The U.S. federal indictment of bin Laden charges that as far back as 1992 he "and others known and unknown, made efforts to obtain the components of nuclear weapons."

Bin Laden, in a November 2001 interview with a Pakistani journalist, boasted having hidden such components "as a deterrent." And in 1998, a Russian nuclear weapons design expert was investigated for allegedly working with bin Laden's Taliban allies.

It was revealed last month that Pakistan's top nuclear scientist had sold sensitive equipment and nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea, fueling fears the information could have also fallen into the hands of terrorists.

Earlier, Mir told Australian media that al-Zawahiri also claimed to have visited Australia to recruit militants and collect funds.

"In those days, in early 1996, he was on a mission to organize his network all over the world," Mir was quoted as saying. "He told me he stopped for a while in Darwin, he was ... looking for help and collecting funds."

Australia's Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said the government could not rule out the possibility that al-Zawahiri visited Australia in the 1990s under a different name.

"Under his own name or any known alias he hasn't traveled to Australia," Ruddock told reporters Saturday. "That doesn't mean to say that he may not have come under some other false documentation, or some other alias that's not known to us."

Mir describe al-Zawahiri as "the real brain behind Usama bin Laden."

"He is the real strategist, Usama bin Laden is only a front man," Mir was quoted as saying during the interview. "I think he is more dangerous than bin Laden."

Al-Zawahiri — an Egyptian surgeon — is believed to be hiding in the rugged region around the Pakistan-Afghan border where U.S. and Pakistani troops are conducting a major operation against Taliban and Al Qaeda forces.

He is said to have played a leading role in orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

This is all a dogma being created against Pakistan. Its a part of conspiracy to destroy Pakistan's nuclear weapons or to take control of them. Al-Qaeda has almost vanished. USA had said that Al-Qaeda is a threat to them, they could do a lot of destruction, so where did the destruction go after the killing of ALQAEDA head Osama Bin Laden. No attack on America was launched after his death as a revenge even. Earlier, the USA had said that Al-Qaeda was responsible for such a big attack on America (9/11) but after that nothing happened and it was then understood that America used this all story to attack Afghanistan. Now same case is being done with Pakistan, showing that Pakistani Nuclear weapons are not safe, BLAH BLAH,

But let me tell you, Pakistan Army has full control over all its capabilities and powers and the nuclear weapons are in extreme security. The nuclear weapons are not a hand grenade to blast in seconds. There are counted and highly professional people in the countries who know to run a nuclear capable missile. Its not 1945 where you just dropped the bomb on Hiroshima from a plane. Its not an easy task and Pakistan ARMY is extremely alert and capable. Al- Qaeda is finished and is no more, its just a hype in creation by our enemies.
