Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates

Updated at: 1359 PST, Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates NEW DELHI: Al-Qaeda is seeking to de-stabilise the entire South Asia region and could trigger a war between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told reporters on Wednesday.

Groups under Al-Qaeda's "syndicate" in Afghanistan and Pakistan are trying "to destabilise not just Afghanistan, not just Pakistan, but potentially the whole region by provoking a conflict perhaps between India and Pakistan through some provocative act," Gates said during a visit to New Delhi.

"It's important to recognise the magnitude of the threat that the entire region faces," he said following talks with his Indian counterpart, A.K. Antony.

Gates cited three main groups operating under Al-Qaeda's "umbrella," the Taliban forces fighting in Afghanistan, Taliban elements targeting Pakistan's government and the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Pakistan focused on India.

Although he praised India for exercising restraint after the 2008 Mumbai attacks -- which Delhi blamed on LeT -- Gates suggested India could not be expected to remain restrained if it was attacked again.

"I think it's not unreasonable to assume India patience would be limited were there to be further attacks," he said.

The Mumbai assault left 166 dead and India has demanded Pakistan come under more international pressure to rein in militant groups on its soil.

Gates described India as a vital partner in the struggle against extremist threats, expressed appreciation for its economic aid to Afghanistan and said that he discussed how to bolster US-India military cooperation.

It wont be Al-Qaida, Al-Qaida will be used as an excuse. Why the heck has Robert Gates gone blind with the internal terrorism of India in the form of Naxals, local issues, killing of Sikhs in Kashmir by Hindu Extremists, Samjhota Express and all that.

The next war will be based on false propaganda and that has already been told by Niamat Ullah Shah Wali and that will happen in the area around Tibet and Kashmir. Pakistan must slap this statement and make clear that Pakistan is victim of terrorism sponsored and supported by America and India itself and if poked, we will give an ample response and with not words this time.

Hmmm
but what would Al Qaeda gain if South East Asia was in turmoil ?

Al Qaeda is more interested in KSA and getting western countries out of that part, AND Al Qaeda is interested in getting through to Israel.

some one please explain why OBL be interested in ruining South Asia ?

Vermin thrive in dirt. Sudan & Somalia is examples.

Despite all what is said , there is a definite threat for something that sparks a conflict. Today, PA is turning the screws on the bad guys & they are feeling the heat.

Things never were Hunky Dory between India & Pak. There is a need for restraint should the need ever arise.

While in Pakistan, he would lick our balls, and now when he is in india, let him do theirs.

Let's see if he has the guts to say these words when he is visiting Pakistan.

Just another step towards the indian appeasement by the US, we can also call this as scare-mongering as this is the only purpose it serves.

Using terror as a pretext to pressurize States isnt new, why dont Gates suggest india to bring a Corps or two at their borders to stop these terrorists to enter india instead of patting india to mourn louder! Let's see how india would feel when it had to commit forces to fight terrorism on home ground as Pakistan already is, we'll see what india has to say then, we'll see if india would feel like pointing fingers on others then!

And the US, well, you people have no face, you have shown that you can go down to the whorish level when you have to please someone!

If God Forbids a war brook out , whom it will benefit the most . It will be surely destructive .. However its highly unlikely unless like America , India also wants to pursue its designs behind the curtains of Al Qaeda . The PA should be prepared for the coming tough days . If its Indo-Pak war the Yanks want , so a War there shall be ....!

Terrorists supported by Pakistan won't tolerate Pakistan making an about face. Aside from attacking Pakistan, they'll do their level-best to create a war by attacking Pakistan's enemies and leaving a clear trail back to the source.

While Pakistanis believe these beasts are your personal attack-dogs, they've another agenda in mind that brooks nothing good for you.

Common enough strategy to play both sides against the middle and will assure their continued viability regardless of what comes to the host.

That's seen now in Pakistan's west. Most prudent analysts see no functional difference between the TTP and the afghan taliban. Neither are served by a concerted alliance between the government of Pakistan, its people, and those of Afghanistan. Better to promote discord and mayhem at every turn and watch the mutual suspicions tear their targets apart for them.

DO THIS: Until the Pakistani gov't speaks honestly to its citizens about the gross mistakes make in harboring proxies and the subsequent blowback that's nobody's fault but Pakistan this shall continue and the risk of thermonuclear war caused by their bloody intrigues will remain highest on every nation's mind.

DO MORE: Until others see Pakistan move with resolute determination against all whom it now harbors, nobody will believe empty words in any case. Remove your proxies and their sanctuary.:agree:

Thanks.:usflag:

US instead of doing it twice, do this once:

Kick start the indians and tell them to refrain from feed their dogs inside Afg and Pakistan, i bet everything would come back to normal.

Believe me it is not that difficult to comprehend.

This way neither the US has to accuse us of harboring 'proxies' nor the world have to keep their pinkies under their teeth while they await a nuclear KABOOM!!

I think I can agree with this argument, adding to the list of premise
I would say that the USA and West need some thing to get their
industrial wheels rolling again.

The stimulus packages etc, have not been able to stimulate the
economy enough.

India + Pakistan + Afghanistan even Iran right now are the most fertile lands in the world with respect to

1. Soil conditions for agriculture
2. Climate favoring work 365 days a year
3. Mineral wealth.
4. huge and skilled human resource.

These factors present huge opportunities to make money to the capitalist entrepreneur.

Thus it would be safe to assume that any destabilization resulting to war will benefit the west more than any one else.
