Senior al-Qaeda leader Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a drone strike in Pakistan on Monday, a US official has told the BBC.

US officials said Libi was the target of a drone strike which hit a volatile tribal area of Pakistan's north-west, killing 15 suspected militants.

There has been no confirmation of his death from sources in Pakistan.

According to officials, he played a critical role in the group's planning against the West.

"There is no one who even comes close in terms of replacing the expertise al-Qaeda has just lost," the US official told the BBC.

The source added that al-Qaeda's leadership "will be hard-pressed to find any one person who can readily step into [Libi's] shoes".

But the drone strike sparked anger in Pakistan and the foreign ministry lodged a formal protest with a US diplomat in Islamabad.

So, kill about 20 civilians for one AQ. Quite a strategy!

.
^^ how do you know they were civilians?

Why would this al qaeda leader travel with 20 travel civilians?

.
I meant 20 or so people in previous attacks, not this one.

This killing has really pissed upon Pakistan.

It gives a bit credibility to their drone strikes now, atleast for sometime.

We say there is nothing, and there you have libbi living there. Although he might have been a regular transit through the border, and shifting places regulrly, and shifted to pakistan recently, and then Afghansistan, then pakistan and so on. CHanging locations.

lanat ho.

Okay I am a bit curious:

Current Al-Qaeda commander is Egyptian.. Second in command is Libyan. Al-Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula's head was Awlaki (American). Why is KSA the only one taking the blame??

Because it was founded by a Saudi

They believe in this extremist Wahhabi ideology which was started in Saudi

They are funded by Saudis

15 of the 19 hijackers are Saudis

bin laden attacked USA because of American troops on Saudi Soil

its the same strike...

16 people were killed in the strike on june 4th

US intelligence confirmed after intercepting militant communication and other methods that al qaeda number 2 was killed

is it any wonder why i totally support drone strikes

They are a necessary evil. I personally wish the Pakistani Army would act against these terrorists but if they cant or wont, then drone strikes are necessary to kill these terrorists before they plan more attacks.

A high value AQ member killed!! and people here were dissing the drone strikes

I wasn't and I never have :D

Infact when Pakistani Army launches offensive in tribal areas, they kill and displace more people than these drone strikes.

Pakistani Army uses World War II tactics of heavy artillery strikes and then sending in air force and then advancing on enemy positions which kills lots of innocents people in these bombardments.

Drone strikes are pin pricks which take out terrorists in a targetted area. Civilians do get killed. Its regrettable but there is no weapon platform that comes close to the drone in preventing civilian casualties.
