Allegations have surfaced that some people claiming themselves as police detectives picked up an Awami League leader from the capital, Dhaka.

Local leaders and activists of the ruling party demonstrated blocking the streets near the party headquarters at Bangabandhu Avenue on Sunday night protesting the action.

They said a Joint Convenor of the ward 56 unit, Ruhul Amin, was whisked away near the Golap Shah Mazar at around 9:30pm.

Raju Ahmed, another Joint Convenor of the party’s same unit, told bdnews24.com some people introduced them as Detective Branch policemen and left the place with Amin with them in a private car for the headquarters.

He said demonstrators included the leaders and activists of Awami League, its youth front Juba League and student affiliate Chhatra League.

”They freed the road only after police assured them of returning Ruhul,” he added.

Ahmed claimed that police denied having taken Amin to their office.

Over the issue, Paltan Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Sarwar said, “I have heard that an Awami League leader is missing. But none has lodged any complaints with my station.”

”Police are investigating the matter,” he added.
