Recently I was scrolling through Wikipedia and I saw that they have Al Khalid's armor rated at 650 mm...First of all, isn't this exact number and capability classified? The other modern MBT's do not disclose their armor capability other than the name of the current armor package. If this is public knowledge, does anyone know the exact capabilities and components to Al Khalid's armor and how it ranks with systems like Shtora?

Thanks

I dought this is true. I was reading a book somewhere and it had the Al Khalid tank in it. The book said that it was indeed classified and even the exact armor used was classified. The only thing being is that I cannot remember the name of the book because it has been a while.

Ah the common error of Wikipedia as a source a site which can be edited by just about anyone.

I have a copy of Janes Land Systems by Christopher Foss and in that the armour is listed as classified.

I would also noty compare Shtora to armour as it is a defensive aid not armour.

Yeah I knew they'd be classified I just thought maybe someone had a better source on the armor capabilities, and 650 mm for frontal is not bad when you think about most modern mbt's are probably around 600...

I'm aware Shtora is a defensive aid but does Al Khalid employ something of this nature?

Heck I agree with you JK that is one seriously effective system.

I don't actually know the specifics of the system or its effectiveness but its principle function is a good idea ie blind the targeting sensors.

that picture is not an Al Khalid. It looks like a Type 99A2 fitted with ERA, coinciding with specifications of an upgraded and possible export version of the Type 99.

The systems primary function is very unique. It does not just take out or counter enemy munitions instead it goes directally for the electro optic system and the enemy gunner.

Electro-Optical Countermeasures
The ZTZ99 utilises a unique electro-optical countermeasures suite, which is located on the turret roof behind the gunner hatch. The system comprises a laser warning receiver (LWR) and an box-shape active laser self-defence weapon (LSDW), which was designed to use high-powered laser to attack the enemy weapon's optics and gunner. Once the LWR detects that the tank is being illuminated by an enemy range-finding or weapon-guidance laser, the system warns the tank crew and the LSDW is employed against the source of the enemy laser. The LSDW can disrupt the laser/infrared guidance signal of the enemy missile, disable the enemy observation optics (optical, night vision, thermal imager, laser rangefinder, etc.), and damage the eyesight of the enemy gunner. Photos of the Type 99 showed that the LSDW can be elevated to a higher angle than the tank's main gun, indicating that the engagement of attack helicopters is possible.

echo1,

This laser module has been replaced in the ztz99a2 by an active defensive module (details are unknown).
