Thanks for correction. It seems to have many similarities with Al Khalid/MBT 2000 like the panoramic sight, night sight, chassis, vision blocks, turret etc.

No prob, this seems to be the Type-98/99 variant as Type-96 doesn't have panoramic sights.

Some Features of Al-Khalid (3rd Generation Tank).

1) Operated by a crew of three and armed with a 125 mm smooth-bore tank gun that is reloaded automatically. It is small and lighter then other 3rd generation tanks and can move upto 72KM/H.

2)it has modern fire-control system (A fire-control system is a number of components working together, usually a gun data computer, a director, and radar, which is designed to assist a weapon system in hitting its target.) integrated with night-fighting equipment and is capable of firing many types of anti-tank rounds as well as guided anti-tank missiles.

3)Al-Khalid has modular composite armour and explosive reactive armour, nuclear-biological-chemical defences, an effective thermal smoke generator, internal fire extinguisher and explosion-suppression system. The infra-red signature of the tank is reduced by infra-red reflective paint.

Indigenously developed laser threat sensor for Al Khalid and Al Zarrar mbts

Laser Threat Sensor LTS786P is an early warning device which gives audio and visual alarms of threat by sensing a laser beam aimed at it from any direction. The exact location of the threat (in-coming beam) is indicated by nine LEDs, covering all directions above horizon. It has the capability to differentiate between a Laser Range Finder, Laser Target Designator or a Laser Target Tracker Signal. In addition, a provision of sensor output signal, interfacing for appropriate counter-measures, is also available. It can be used on stationary or moving objects of any size or shape.

Appreciatrion of Al Khalid mbt by Parson Sengupta on his blog while debating with indian and russian members. Now they are realizing the threat they will face in foreseeable future. Better late than never!

In the early 2002, Malaysian defense delegation visited the Heavy Industry Taxila and observed the mbt manufacturing process. They were particularly impressed in the Al Khalid MBT as they heard the reputation and on the basis of their previous weapon purchases from Pakistan (anza surface to air millsiles), they wanted this mbt. After witnessing the trials, they were very impressed and showed an interest in buying an initial batch of 50. All was in place for Al Khalid's first export order when a hurdle arrived. The Ukrainian engine was not acceptable as Malaysia at that time, had very little (if any) political terms with Ukrainians. The purchase of PT-91 was more of a compromise as realized by Malaysian Military later when they began to have severe problems with fire control, accuracy and gun jamming issues. The Bottom Line is that Al Khalid was the preferred choice because of versatility, fire power, mobility, protection, advance fire control system and ruggedness.
