Akmal a match-fixing suspect: Reports
Indiaabroad, Indo Asian News Service, 26 February 2010

Karachi, Feb 26 (IANS) Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal is under investigation for suspected match-fixing and could be sidelined from the World Twenty20 championship to be held in the West Indies in April-May, a leading daily reported here Friday.
Quoting sources, 'The News' reported that Kamran was axed from the Pakistan squad for the two Twenty20 Internationals against England in Dubai because there are suspicions that he might have deliberately dropped catches during the second Test in Sydney against Australia last month.

The 28-year-old was dropped from the third and final match of the series in Hobart for the first time in 42 Tests and five years but returned for the limited-overs games. He smashed a 33-ball 64 in the tour-ending Twenty20 International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but was still dropped from the touring party for the Dubai matches.
Officially, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Kamran was overlooked for the brief Dubai visit because of his poor showing in Australia as well as his statements after the Sydney Test in which he insisted he will play in Hobart in spite of the fact that PCB had rushed young glovesman Sarfaraz Ahmed to Australia for the final Test.
'Otherwise, how can you leave out a player who had scored 64 from 33 balls against Australia in his last match,' said the source. 'He (Kamran) is a suspect.'

Kamran, who was Pakistan's vice-captain in the Test series against Australia, came under intense fire for his pathetic showing behind the stumps in the Sydney Test which Pakistan lost by 36 runs.
He dropped Mike Hussey three times in that Test allowing the veteran batsman to score a match-winning hundred. Kamran also floored Peter Siddle besides wasting a run-out opportunity against Shane Watson and was later singled out for Pakistan's defeat from a seemingly-winning position.

The menace of match-fixing is not new for Pakistan cricket. Last October, National Assembly's sports committee chief Jamshed Dasti accused the Pakistan team of deliberately losing to Australia to knock old rivals India out of the Champions Trophy in South Africa. However, the committee later cleared the team of any wrongdoings.
Back in 2000, former Pakistan captain Salim Malik and medium pacer Ata-ur Rehman were found guilty of match-fixing by Justice Malik Qayyum. They were both banned for life following a year-long investigation.

PCB suspect Akmal's involvement in match-fixing
February 26, 2010 12:16 IST

The ghost of match-fixing has returned again to haunt the Pakistan cricket team, and this time it is wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal who seems to be under its glare.

Insiders said that the selectors had axed Akmal from the two T20 match series against England [ Images ] in Dubai [ Images ], over suspicions that he deliberately dropped catches during the second Test match against Australia [ Images ] in Sydney [ Images ].

Pakistan was in a commanding position in the Sydney Test match after bowling out Australia for a paltry 127 in the first innings but lost the match amazingly by 36 runs losing all wickets while chasing 176 runs.

"He (Kamran) is a suspect. Otherwise how can you leave out a player who had scored 64 from 33 balls against Australia in his last match," The News quoted sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as saying.

Sources said Akmal may be sidelined for the forthcoming ICC [ Images ] T20 World Championship, which is scheduled to be held in the Caribbean in May, if he fails to clear his name from the allegations.

This is not the first time that a Pakistani cricketer has been suspected of match-fixing.

Last October, National Assembly's sports committee chief Jamshed Dast accused the Pakistan team of deliberately losing to Australia to knock old rivals India [ Images ] out of the Champions Trophy [ Images ] in South Africa [ Images ]. However, the committee later cleared the team of any wrongdoings.

In 2000, former Pakistan captain Salim Malik and medium pacer Ata-ur Rehman were found guilty of match-fixing by Justice Malik Qayyum. They were both banned for life following a year long investigation into the allegations.

The inquiry was launched in response to charges of betting and match-fixing against several of Pakistan's top cricketers, including former captains Wasim Akram [ Images ] and Salim Malik, spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed, and middle order batsman Ijaz Ahmed.

On a day of considerable confusion, the PCB said it had received evidence from the ICC regarding the involvement of Pakistan players in match-fixing. Initially, after a press conference in which Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, seemed to indicate the two players were from the current squad, he told Cricinfo that the cases, incidents and players involved were old ones.

Akmal, Rana under match-fixing scanner: Reports

February 27, 2010 20:08 IST

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal and pacer Rana Naved are the two players allegedly under investigation by the Pakistan Cricket Board for their involvement in match-fixing.

Voice of America, quoting a highly placed source in the PCB, reported on Saturday that both the players were dropped for the Twenty20 [ Images ] international series against England [ Images ] in Dubai [ Images ] this month for their role in match-fixing during their recent tour to Australia [ Images ].

"Although both have been named in the 30 probables for the T20 World Cup but they will eventually not be selected in the final 15," the source said.

According to the source, the PCB acted after the International Cricket Council [ Images ] (ICC [ Images ]) provided them with information that linked the two players to match-fixing.

PCB chairman Ejaz Butt had stopped short of naming the two players at a press conference on Friday.

Butt first claimed that two Pakistani players were under investigation for match fixing but shockingly later retracted his statement saying he was talking about an old case.

Butt created further confusion when he said that the PCB was provided such information by the ICC because of which they have been forced to take action against the players.

He refused to divulge any names claiming it was a confidential matter between the board and ICC.

Kamran's performance on the recent Australian tour has been under intense scrutiny after he dropped three catches and missed a big run out in the match that Pakistan eventually lost by just 32 runs.

Sources have told PTI that even Abdul Raquib who went as manager on the Australian tour had told the inquiry committee of the board about his apprehensions about Kamran's performances.
