The Lohegaon base of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will soon get air defence (AD) cover from the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM). The airbase will induct a squadron of the missile weapon system, the development of which has contributions from three Defence labs in Pune.

The Gwalior airbase has already inducted a squadron of the medium-range SAM while several squadrons are being stationed at IAF bases along the Northeast.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday in the backdrop of Air Force Day celebrations to be held on October 8, Air Commodore V R Chaudhari, Air Officer Commanding of the Lohegaon-based 2 Wing said, “The Akash weapon system will be inducted here. The induction is in the final stages and the entire equipment is expected in a few months.” Akash system is expected to replace the Russian Pechora SAM system of the IAF, phasing out of which is long overdue.

Akash has been developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

The system integration has been done by DRDL, Hyderabad. Three DRDO laboratories in the city too have contributed to development of the missile. While the launcher has been developed by the Research and Development Establishment (R&DE) in Dighi, the warhead has been developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE). The High Energy Materials Research Laboratory developed the propellant.

The all-terrain weapon system can simultaneously engage several air targets in fully automated operations mode.

The missile system underwent user trials in 2007 and IAF placed an order for eight Akash Missile Squadrons, the second of which is being inducted in the city after Gwalior. The system will also be deployed at forward airbases in the Northeast. A senior IAF official said, “The deployment at Pune airbase was always in the plan. The advantages of Akash is that it is indigenous, modern and a technologically advanced air defence system. It should be fully operational in three-four months.”

A senior retired IAF official said, “Pune is an important airbase. The system is crucial for safeguarding IAF Lohegaon station assets from aerial threats.”

Why do I need to know this? Shouldn't they keep this a secret. The enemies may know, but let them atleast sweat it out to get that information.
I'd have been happy if the report said we have deployed Aakash at multiple strategic locations.

I'm happy it is being deployed though!

. . . . .
very good news

so which SAM Akash will replace at Lohehgaon? Panchora?

. . .
This indeed a very good news in a while. Now if and only DRDO can fast track on low level quick reaction Maitri missile. There were rumors back in 2009 on kick starting next-generation surface-to-air missile (LLQRM) being developed by Indian-based Defence Research and Development Organization in collaboraion with the Britain-based MBDA. Hopefully soon we would hear somthing end of this year about the project being near testing phase of SR-SAM for out upcoming Navy distroyers. meanwhile enjoy the Multilayered Air Defence. It is quite a site to see a full batch of Akash SAM System deployed on tracked, wheeled and surface fitted on different platforms maneuvering around linked to each other. Then again why would you be so excited, or what do you have to even present any platform to beat this system.???.. at present nothing is at your disposal so your offtopic 2 cents are just what they appear to be...:P

Pune airfield to get modern defence system - Times Of India

Pune airfield to get modern defence system
Vishwas Kothari, TNN Oct 4, 2012, 06.13AM IST

PUNE: The Indian Air Force's (IAF) premier airbase at Lohegaon here will soon get a network-centric all-weather air defence weapon system called 'Akash' , which will protect the airfield from enemy air strikes.

"From the ground, the Akash weapon system can shoot down fighter aircraft , choppers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or cruise missiles up to a range of 30 km," said Wg Cdr Piyush Gupta, a senior officer at the Air Force Station (AFS), Pune.

"This is an indigenous weapon system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation in partnership with Bharat Electronics and is currently in the induction phase. The first Akash squadron is in the final stages of induction at the IAF's Gwalior airbase while the second will soon be inducted at AFS, Pune. A few more Akash squadrons will be inducted at IAF airbases in the eastern sector," Gupta said.

Air Commodore Vivek R Chaudhari, Air Officer Commanding , AFS, Pune, said, "We expect the Akash squadron to be inducted here in a few months from now. In fact, some of the equipment has already landed here while some more equipment is going through integration trials ."

An officer at the AFS, Pune, said, "The Akash weapon system has been developed under the integrated guided missile development programme and comes as a highly sophisticated amalgam of systems that work in concert ."

Most IAF airbases have been using Russian systems considered age-old in terms of attacking air targets.

"The Akash system uses a mobile 'Rohini' radar for detecting an aircraft even from 120-odd km away. A coded electronic interrogator ascertains the identity of the aircraft. The radar then relays an alert to the Akash squadron headquarters , which controls the engagement," the officer said.

"The task of shooting down the target is allocated through a secure digital link to the squadron's two missile flights, which are normally about 25 km away, to cover the maximum area. The designated flight control centre locks its sophisticated 3D phased-array radar onto the enemy fighter and calculates the launch parameters for an Akash missile to shoot down the target at its maximum range of 30 km," the officer said. Meanwhile, the Modernisation of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI) project will commence at the Lohegaon airfield towards the end of November or December, depending upon the feedback received from the IAF's Bhatinda airbase where the MAFI works were carried out first on a pilot basis, Air Commodore Chaudhari said.

"MAFI is an ambitious project to be implemented by a Tata group company for the modernization of 30 airfields including one naval airbase. The IAF started with Bhatinda , where the project was completed recently. We are now waiting for it to stabilize so that the project can start in Pune," Chaudhari said.

"Installing the runway central line in a phased manner entails digging up the runway . Usually, the installation process takes two to three months. We have assured the airport authorities and airlines that we will not reduce any of the existing civilian flights," Chaudhari added.

:P

Does project a sense of confidence in the system, however, do we know that this system indeed is not shoved down IAF's throat.

Even if it is, this is the only way to develop our own capabilities. Fully support the move! :)
