well guys this is entirely not a new idea, it was conceived in few hollywood films, what looks fictional today can become a reality tomorrow, infact thats what I have learned in my life.

Just watch the movie called Sky captain starred by Angela Joley.

May be if we talk about Space War ( aircraft entering orbit from space to destroy targets) then it is possible to have a space station to launch air crafts.

But can't we make it's Armor Thick i mean like tanks.

As a matter of fact i first got this idea from that game sometime ago.

I mean look at that game Zeppelins were carrying cargo including heavy vehicles inside them and there were aircraft's taking off from the side.

And Again for the defence of SAM can't we make it of thick steel and other hardened material used in tanks.

The heavier it gets, difficult it would be to make to fly. So no thick armor like tanks.

A hypothetical flying AC will consume more fuel than rest of the navy/airforce. It would need constant supply of refuelers to keep itself in air for an extended period. A modern career group need lot of stuff to just protect itself, a flying one will need more. Cause an floating AC is hard to track, hard to attack on. A flying one will be a big bulls eye. And thickest of armors can be penetrated. Think, an atleast 500 m long plane, carrying atleast 1000 tonnes of weight..

Besides, there is no purpose it can possibly solve, it cant remain in distant region for long time, which is the main purpose of an AC.

Apart from costs, there would be immense technological difficulty.

Armor cannot be made extremely thick. There would be practical limits regarding thickness of armor. And whatever the thickness/strength of armor, weapons would be made to penetrate it. Also, there would be theoretical limit regarding the size, armor, and helium which can be filled. Based on plain theory, not practical limit.
Do you know even solids like metals are porous? Gases will leak right through the metal without any hole? Besides, the bigger the structure, more points for leakage of helium. So even without diffusion through metals, gas will find vents to leak through. Helium in that much quantity to keep the machine airborne even for short periods will be extremely costly and hard to produce.

Its maintenance would be a nightmare. It will be a slow machine, very slow, and far less maneuverable than an floating career.
