A member of Air India's ground crew has been sucked in to an aircraft's engine and killed instantly.

The incident happened earlier today at Mumbai Airport in India while the aircraft was preparing for departure to Hyderabad.

The technician was killed after being sucked into the jet engine during push back at 9pm local time.

Air India has said it is 'deeply saddened' by what it described as a 'mishap' and a 'tragic' incident.

The aircraft, AI 619, was at a parking bay at the airport's T2 Terminal and was preparing for departure to Hyderabad.

Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said this afternoon: 'An Air India technician died in a mishap during pushback of flight AI 619. The incident is being investigated.

'We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident at Mumbai airport. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.'

An airport official told Hindustan Times: 'The body is still stuck in the engine, efforts are going on to retrieve it.'

It is not yet clear how the worker came to be so close to the engine.

Air India bosses are yet to say how many people were on board the plane and whether any passengers had witnessed the incident.

RIP. Terrible way to go. People responsible for skirting safety protocols should be hung by the balls!

the engine must have been at taxing thrust at least or the enigne was at higher thrust than instructed, no one should be near the jet. the only time where somone should be near the thing is during pull back on to the apron.

was it miss commincation?
or was he in the wrong place at the wrong time.?

Will have to be investigated as to how this happened. I suspect the victim was at fault to some degree since there are very clearly defined procedures about approaching an engine (or letting one approach you) during the APU start up/push-back process.

A person cannot simply be walking by and the large engine starts out of the blue.

i did read that a someone gave the co pilot the signal to start the engines whilst the man was near the engine.
also here in the uk when somone has died and the courpse remainswe identify them by their dental records.

There are incidents reported before..... Have seen pictures of a emirates flight engine.....Another video of a man sucked into a fighter jet.....Terrible way to die.....

Engine already running due to malfunctioned APU, so all power generated from engine directly during boarding (pretty normal in aviation), but air brakes are not on right position & when victim goes for putting out safty pin of landing gear out (which makes possible to up the landing gears in the bays after take off) , this incident happened.
So, serious of error cause this painful incident.

So, serious of error cause this painful incident.
if that was the case the engine would only need to be ideling to produce the power. if the aircraft was stationary then a gpu would have been an option. but the jet was being pulled back. and at a maximum the engine should have been at idal, not at taxi thrust. it protocal that the jet must be on the apron and noone near it for it to produce enough power for it to pull someone in.

what plane was it? or do you know its registration so i can look it up?
