Air India plane crash: 'Sleepy' pilot blamed

.
A tragic incident.
The pilot was pretty experienced, and there should be no generalization about pilots from a particular part of the world.

In this case, even though he had his mandated rest hours, he must have been tired-so he slept throughout the flight. Once you wake from a deep sleep, you feel groggy/zonked and usually look for a cup of tea. In this case, he had to land an aircraft at one of the trickiest runways in India.

The co-pilot was a good pilot (known to me personally) but he hesitated when the Capt screwed up.

Pure pilot error, tragic that so many people died because of it.

Pilots get plenty of rest. That is mandated. Many airlines allow pilots to sleep when the plane is on auto control. The Co-pilot was reasonably experienced, so that can't have been the problem by itself. It must have been a combination of some disorientation because of sleepiness along with a fear of performing a hard landing which the pilot had been warned for earlier & also the fear of a DGCA hearing if he aborted the landing & went around that caused this terrible tragedy. Air India has relaxed the rule on hard landings after this unfortunate incident.

Dude, there is norms which I can understand. But you do not know about Air India pilot problems. Serveral time, their gulf bound jets delay for days..coz of pilot refused to fly that his duty time is over. There is always technical snags in the jet. Its all messed buddy.

Pilots used to sleep when it is in auto pilot mode and the co pilot used to take care. Both pilots had been experianced with 70+ and 30+ landing experiance in that table top runway. And I read somewhere in the news paper that if a pilot does some small error(i have no technical knowledge abt it) twice, they need to go through two days training. So in order to avoid that, pilots always land a bit ahead of the proposed touch down point.

sleepy pilot and the cost cutting tactics of the management..They over work their pilots...so that they can get more from lesser number of staff, and as a result pilots regularly get work related stresses...The management shouold be asked about how they schedule their pilot's work timings? do they have enough sleep between consecutive shifts?

Its easy to blame mangalore aircrash on sleepy pilot.but then there wre reports of airport being constructed at wrong location due to vested political interests involved with airstrip directly looking down the gorge. This blaming of crash on sleepy pilot is just to save those political builder nexuses and other interest group lobbies.jai ho.

Blame on Air india I accept, this Accident is mainly due to pilot or mismangement

The Indian Air Force has dismissed suggestions that the “tabletop” airstrip in Mangalore makes for tough landings and take-offs that puts passengers and aircraft at risk.

It is a world-wide problem. Pilots are exhausted. You know those "red-eye" flights that go from midnight to the next morning? Everyone thinks the pilots are on shift work and are crisp and alert...

Not hardly. We battle fatigue all night. It is miserable. It has also been shown that fatigue is as bad as alcohol on performance.

Everyone wants super-cheap tickets. Airlines cut personnel and overwork those remaining. Cheap, cheap, cheaper, that is the mantra. We are going to see more of these.
