Air Force to procure full-motion simulators to train rookie pilots.
Published: Saturday, Oct 1, 2011, 16:48 IST

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will procure full-motion simulators to train rookie pilots of Antonov-32 (AN-32) and Dornier at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka.

The simulators will be inducted over the next two years at the Yelahanka station, the IAF’s main base to train transport pilots.

These simulators will be an addition to the two static AN-32 and Dornier.

Wing Commander M Maindargin, in-charge, Flying Training Device, said the hydraulic full-motion simulators would give the tilt effect, providing the trainee pilots a real feel of flying.

He said pilots are first made to undergo training on the simulators to get them acclimatised with the aircraft controls and different situations. He added that training on simulators is cheaper than training on aircraft. The induction of the new simulators is expected to shorten the training period, he said.

The trainees undergo six months of training, during which they are made to fly 27 hours on the simulator and 87 hours on the aircraft. The AN-32 and the Dornier are the main transport aircrafts in the IAF’s fleet, with the former used for carrying troops and goods and the latter exclusively for VIP travel.

Passing-out parade
A passing-out parade of the 19th batch training under the Modular Pattern of Training in the Electronic, Logistics and Operations Stream was conducted at Air Force Station, Jalahalli, on Friday.

A total of 1,099 trainees graduated. The parade was reviewed by Air Vice-Marshal Hemant Sharma, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Systems) Air HQ.

. . . .
slowly every country will acquire simulators. Here's why:

Now its becoming more and more expensive to give flight hours to air force pilots.
in fact private companies trainee pilots are getting more flight hours than government pilots (airforce pilots).

it has become financially unfeasible for airforces to train pilots now. they can't give them long flight hours like pilots of the past.

. . .
I believe Dorniers are used for general utility and only rarely and as a last resort for VVIP travel, a friend of mine who recently returned from a exchange program with Indian armed forces took a flight from Delhi to Chandigarh in a Dornier and he told me it's just a basic cargo plane like anything else so as a passenger it was uncomfortable. I think VVIPs would prefer to ride in recent, dedicated inductions such as Embrear and BBJs aswell as the old Avros which I believe are almost exclusively used for VVIP transport.
