India on Thursday successfully test-fired nuclear weapons capable ballistic missile, Agni-1 for its full strike range of 700 km from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Wheeler Island, off the Odisha Coast.

The indigenously-developed, single stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was fired by the personnel of the Strategic Force Command (SFC) as part of regular user training.

According to Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources, the surface-to-surface missile carrying a total payload mass of 1100 kg zeroed in on the pre-designated target in the Bay of Bengal with two-digit accuracy. “It was a fantastic launch. We got the telemetry data till the end of the event,” added the sources.

Scientific advisor to Defence Minister Avinash Chander, DRDO Director-General (Missiles and Strategic Systems) Dr. V.G. Sekaran and other senior DRDO officials witnessed the launch.

The Agni-1 missile was developed by DRDO in a short span of 15 months after the Kargil conflict to meet the requirements of the armed forces for such a class of missile.

India on Thursday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from a military base in Odisha, a defence official said.
The missile, which can strike a target 700 km away and can carry a one-tonne nuclear warhead, was tested by the armed forces as part of user trial from a facility on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, 170 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
"It was a perfect launch," director of the test range M V K V Prasad told IANS.
Agni is an intermediate range ballistic missile. It uses solid propulsion booster and a liquid propulsion upper stage, derived from India's first indigenously developed ballistic missile Prithvi.

I like the Payload but 2 digit accuracy is not good. It should be 1 digit. If it is low 2 digit, it is still ok. This missile may be good for run way airports and other military structure but not good enough for underground bunker or bunker bruster or any other precision strike requiring single digit accuracy. Was GOM3 chip used for guidence which tested on brahmos last month.

Balasore (Odisha): India on Thursday successfully test-fired it’s indigenously built nuclear capable Agni-I missile, which has a strike range of 700 km, from a test range off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the Army.

The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher at about 11.11 hours from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Wheeler Island, about 100 km from here, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta said.

Describing the trial as fully successful, Gupta said the ballistic missile was launched by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the army as part of a training exercise.

"The entire exercise was conducted in a perfect manner and the trial was totally successful," he said.

"The DRDO developed medium range ballistic missile from the production lot was launched as part of regular training exercise by the armed forces," said another official.

Agni-I missile has a specialized navigation system which ensures it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

The missile, which has already been inducted in to Armed Forces has proved its excellent performance in terms of range, accuracy and lethality.

Weighing 12 tonnes, the 15-metre-long Agni-I, which can carry payloads up to 1000 kg, has already been inducted into the Indian Army.

Agni-I was developed by advanced systems laboratory, the premier missile development laboratory of the DRDO in collaboration with Defence Research Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat and integrated by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad.

The last trial of the Agni-I missile was successfully carried out on April 12, 2014 from the same base. It was first trial that was launched after sunset.

Good. Waiting for Nirbhay and canister launch Agni-5 now which are also scheduled in this month.

Agni series is only for Nuclear warhead delivery, not for high precision bunker buster or something using conventional warhead.
Agni 1 is for pakistan.. and if we fire agni 1 on pakistan even with conventional target they will assume it with nuclear warhead because they have no other option, no SSBN etc so in fear of total destruction of pakistani nukes they will use nukes.

air launched long range cruise missiles and long range PGMs are enough for pakistan. width of pakistan is less than 1000km.

@HariPrasad: The minimum 2 digit accuracy would be 99 m. What difference would it make on the target if a payload of 1100kg of nuclear or conventional explosives explode at a 99 metres? Agreed, more accuracy is always desired, and single digit one would have been cool, but two digit accuracy isn't "bad":D.

i have read abt Pakistan inducting missiles wid 250 m accuracy
so what diff does it make
the missiles will only be used to carry the nukes

air launched long range cruise missiles and long range PGMs are enough for pakistan. width of pakistan is less than 1000km.


Have you heard or read Avinash chander's interview. He even said that we are boosting Agni V's accruracy so that it may be used in conventional role. US has equipped her long range ICBM with conventional warhead. Precision strike is becoming more and more important day by day. A 200 KT bomb may cause same damage as a 500 KT nuclear bomb if it reaches target precisely with low CEP. We have achieved this 2 digit accuracy a long ago. When there was a news of K 4 launch, one of the high light was that scientists were targeting 0 CEP. When Agni 3 was launched last time, they had targeted single digit accuracy though 2 digit accuracy could be achieved.

Munimum 2 digit accuracy is 10 m. Whether it will make difference or not depends on how soft or hard the target is.

I thought payload of Agni 1 is 1 ton.

I know.

I was pointing out that payload mentioned in 1st post is greater than mentioned on other sites or in news.

How does that really matter? Maybe they pumped more fuel into her........or did some 'servicing' on the engine; changed the spark-plugs or something like-- used K&N filters. :D

@Capt. Popeye we expect you to enlight people like us and not troll. Give some inside information on Agni 1.

Precision this precision that ... Indians how precisely you can measure your heart beat after seeing a Pakistani soldier in front of you... and it all boils down to that...

No we don't need to do that at all.........last time (in 1999) we did some measurements instead of Pakistani Soldiers at Kargil. We counted their dead and then sought to hand them over to PA. But the PA was not willing to accept them, saying that they are only some 'Mujaheddin'. So the IA had to do the measurements of the dead PA Soldiers........just to bury them with some dignity; after all they were human beings and soldiers.....never mind that Musharrraffffff called them 'only some Mujaheddin'.
So the Indian Army has grown quite expert at measurements......to measure "kafans".
