LAHORE - Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, while taking the strike call of the textile industry seriously announced by them on August 7, has invited the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association on Saturday (today) to hold meeting with them.

A delegation of APTMA in the lead of its chairman SM Tanveer will attend the meeting while TDAP chairman SM Muneer and FPCCI president Mian Adrees will also attend the meeting.

Industry sources said that APTMA wants to avoid confrontation with the government and its strike call was taken seriously in the government circles.

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association Chairman S M Tanveer while talking to The Nation said if industry’s issues are not resolved then mills would go on strike on 7th of Aug and as many as 10 million textile workers would be on roads to protest and record their worries over the viability issues of textile industry.

Chairman APTMA said other leading associations of the textile industry including Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA), All Pakistan Power-looms Association (APA) and the All Pakistan Sizing Industry Association (APSIA) have extended their support to APTMA for a countrywide strike on 7th August.

He said that our members have urged the APTMA management to call on the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Punjab and Federal Finance Minister forthwith to represent and resolve viability issues of the industry.

He said the members of the Association have also unanimously decided to hold one say strike on Friday, 7th August 2015, followed by a countrywide strike for indefinite period in case the issues relating to the viability of the textile industry remain unresolved thereafter.

He said the member mills of APTMA were perturbed over the high cost of doing business, unjustified burdening of the industry with various surcharges in electricity bills, enforcement of the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC) and imposition of punitive taxation on the export-oriented textile industry.

He said already 35% of the production capacity has been impaired and a stagnant investment scenario is prevailing over the last six years.
He said the government is aware of industry’s problems as APTMA has already submitted a 7-point agenda to the Ministry of Commerce.
