‘After 70 Years I’ve Come to Realize as a Muslim I Can’t Live in India’: Naseeruddin Shah

vanished in to a private room for over an hour (just the 2 of them, no aides).
World leaders do that, y'know ?

You lot aren't used to your top guy discussing issues with other leaders without a horde of generals keeping watch on him/her, are you ?

You're either a troll or too blinded by hatred.

No point trying to discuss anything with you. Should've known, seeing your previous reply but I tried anyway.

Take care, have a nice day open defecating on the forum with your useless troll shit.

He can read and write just fine, just no degrees in women's studies or a phd for writing a thesis on the brilliance of Marx.

Not an illiterate in the literal sense. ;)

I actually don't know much about the guy in terms of educational qualifications etc but so what if he doesn't have a certificate ? He's not applying for a professorship, that job requires an entirely different skill set.

not just foreign media, he avoids all media like the plague. I'll tell you why too, because at least here in India, large sections of the biggest media houses are in bed with the congress, which has sustained and enriched these bastards for forever now.. but there's a new sheriff in town 8-)

they can't stand the guy, and the guy in question is well onto their game. Ignore them till irrelevance does them in !

Trump in the US is a very different personality and he seems to have decided, post his tremendous mandate, to take them head on and destroy them. He's been toying with the tabloid media for decades now, right since his days as a sleazy womanizer in the 80s and 90s lol

but Modi still manages to connect with his base frequently with his "man ki baat" radio show, his many rallies, and, to a lesser extent through his twitter. He's very non confrontational and more of a statesman than Mr Trump and his bombast.

They're both reaching their bases regularly, and dealing with a hostile media in their own very distinct ways.

Modi ignores, while Trump bitchslaps them right back, jumps in the gutter, and destroys them at their smear game.

The "cloud cover and streanh (strength)" gaffes are ok, because us, the voters gave him a pass easy on those.

He's our guy, we back him.. You lot across the fence better get used to it because he's not going anywhere.. Frau Merkel is at almost 15 years in highly advanced country of Germanistan.. We'll beat her by a wide margin easy.

That he will, don't worry about it. Realistically, there is no opposition to him, they are all confused ideologically, do not have a coherent message apart from "Modi/RSS bad" or "Saffron man bad", if you will.

Take scrapping 370 for example, that split them wide open, other lefties, Christian political leaders etc from other parties also supported it. Ideologues vs pragmatists in the opposition, for opposing it meant near certain political suicide. They've learnt from Congress' epic defeat in the last general, those guys actually campaigned in reigning our forces back in Kashmir and diluting AFSPA.. look what it got them.

Sonia and her pups must leave if Indian democracy is to survive. Ye 40 saal raj karenge, barring.. can't think of anything.. they survived demonitization..

Honestly don't think he is of a belligerent nature, and he's not out to destroy Pakistan, and definitely not on a mission to kick Indian Muslims out of the country or march them to the tandoors or whatever perverse fantasy the commies like to throw out there.

We got people like Shehla Rashid etc tweeting out rules for "how to be an ally":rofl::rofl::rofl:

They have no idea about India, these UC Berkeley commie copy and paste stuff won't work in India, here.. Swastika is a symbol for good luck, nobody cares, most don't even know about the German history... demeaning the swastik only pushes people to the BJP.

We don't care about European history either, this whole business of calling people "Nazis" can only politically in Germany, Western Europe and the US etc.. although it's failing there too.

He didn't convert her.

A meeting of minds

1975. RATNA PATHAK SHAH was in her second year of college when her relationship with Naseeruddin Shah started evolving. They were from worlds apart—he was seven years older, and was brought up in Meerut; she had grown up in Mumbai, amid Gujaratis and Parsis. But, they did not try to hide their relationship a wee bit. One day, while strolling on Juhu beach in Mumbai, Naseeruddin proposed marriage, and Ratna readily agreed.

Dina Pathak, Ratna’s actor mother, and Baldev, her garment-trading father, were not sure of him though. “Her parents started getting seriously worried that things were getting out of hand. It was time for them to take action and make her lose this drug-addled mongrel she was becoming increasingly fond of and for whom, on odd occasions, she had even defied them,” wrote Naseer in his memoir, And Then One Day. His memoir is peppered with instances of them having a problem with his smoking hashish. Naseer and Ratna eventually got hitched in 1982, after a long wait for his divorce from his first wife to come through.

But, was there any opposition based on religion? “None at all,” said Naseer, sitting at his Bandra residence, with packs of cigarettes lying around on the many tables in the living area. “Ratna’s mother’s objection was that we were from different cultural backgrounds. She realised that I was not a very devout Muslim rightaway. I do not know what she felt about it.”

The problems that they did foresee were more cultural, like, as a family friend told them, “serve alcohol or not; have pictures of Mecca in the house or not,” recalled Naseer. “As it is, I have always been put off by the display of faith. That was never even the intention. It was not the case in my family either. Yes, they prayed, but they never insisted that I follow their example. They told me to try it. I tried, it didn’t work for me.”

Ratna clarified that they never practised their respective religions. “We culturally belonged to those religions,” she said. “We have been able to, however, make our own rules. We do not carry the baggage (of belonging to a certain religion). In an ideal world, that is how everybody should be known.”

The cultural differences were easily overcome. “We could not have a nikah, because Ratna was not a Muslim and I had no intention of even converting her,” said Naseer. His mother, a devout Muslim, did once ask about it. “I told her no, and it was fine,” he said. The family, including children—Heeba (from Naseer’s first marriage), Imaad and Vivaan—cherishes smaller things from all festivals, and celebrates them.

The communal problems of the current times are glaring. Naseer talked about a debate on TV between BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and actor Prakash Raj. “What Swamy was saying was so unreasonable, yet the audience was loving it, applauding it, lapping it up and cheering him on,” he said. “He was saying factually correct things—like which Muslim country has a democracy. But, who is asking for a Muslim government (in India)? It is astonishing to see a cerebral person like him resort to these kind of populist arguments when the need arises. It has become very strange.”

He does not feel threatened, because he has a “somewhat privileged position”. There is no fear because they have not been affected directly, but they empathise with those who have. “We are secure enough in our work and secure enough in our identities, and we have not subscribed to the rabid side of either [of the religions],” said Naseer. But, he is worried about the three cows he has at his farm in Karjat. “Tomorrow, you never know, some people might march in and say, ‘Why does a musalman have cows?’ This kind of thing is happening in continuity all over the country,” he said. “We respect each other’s differences—I have to light lamps on Diwali and Ratna happily makes sewaiyaan on Eid. We do not need to be told that you are not supposed to be married to each other or anything like that.”

Ratna said the Hindu-Muslim situation in the country had come to a boil, and had burst. “And once the dirt comes out, maybe a better future is possible,” she said. “I hope for that and would like to work for that, if possible.” She is waiting for the time things will change. “And it will,” she said. “Nothing stays the same.”

Also world doesn't revolve around Islam or conversion to Islam. Your posts seem to be too obsessed with that.

. .
why would a self-confessed "proud Indian and naastik" convert his wife to Islam? it doesn't make a bit of sense

I don't think that either Sharmila Tagore, or Ratna Pathak, or Kareena Kapoor converted to Islam. They followed, whatever their respective beliefs were, before marriages.

Actor Naseeruddin Shah's daughter Heeba Shah assaulted two staff members, apparently for making her wait for about 5 minutes at a veterinary clinic in Versova, Mumbai on January 16.

Naseeruddin Shah's daughter Heeba Shah had visited the veterinary clinic along with two cats for sterilisation.

When Naseeruddin Shah said he's not safe in India, We all slammed him!

But after watching the way his daughter Heeba Shah assaulted two veterinary clinic staff members in Mumbai, Not just Naseeruddin, but I feel we all are NOT safe! Naseeruddin Kaaka, we are with you!

'Physical abuse was harsh'
Speaking to mid-day, Mriidu Khosla, a trustee of The Feline Foundation said, "On January 16 at 2.50 pm actress Heeba Shah walked into our community veterinary clinic with two cats for sterilisation. Our clinic caretaker asked her to wait for 5 minutes as a surgery was on. After 2-3 minutes of waiting she aggressively said to our staff members, "Don't you know who I am? How can you make me wait for so long outside without any assistance? How come no one helped me to get my cats' cage out of the rickshaw on arrival?"

Heeba Shah

This can be seen in the CCTV footage. On being asked to sign the consent forms for the surgery before we admitted the cats, she got extremely abusive about the system and the place."

"A senior staff member asked her to leave the premises with her cats, after she began to verbally abuse us for no reason. She also slapped and assaulted two female staff members. The physical abuse was harsh, extremely violent and disturbing to say the least," Khosla further said.

The Versova police registered the NC under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) on January 17.

'I hit them, but they started it'
Shah said, "I did hit them, but they started it. The gatekeeper didn't allow me to enter the clinic and asked several questions. I told him that I had an appointment. In the clinic when I told the attendant about the watchman, she also started abusing me and speaking rudely. Then one of the women there pushed me and told me to get out from the premises immediately. This is not the way to speak to anyone who is visiting the clinic. The lady in the clinic started fighting with me. The clinic staff should talk politely to customers visiting their clinic."

Let's not get carried away here. Not all Deobandis are the same.

Dar Ul Uloom has produced wonderful Ulema throughout Islamic history and it is only recently that they have fell under the control of Indians. Their offshoots of JUI/H are just puppets of Indians and the West now. Mullah Diesel is the absolute worst of them in Pakistan, a total sellout to foreigners.

Then you have Tableeghi Jamaat, which had a tremendously positive influence on Muslims throughout the world, leading relapsed believers back into the faith and creating a close knit camaraderie among Muslims.

Lastly, Maulana Maududi and his Jamaat e Islami, which began as a tremendously positive force for Pakistan's Islamic identity. Even though Maududi was conflicted in the beginning, he changed his view and moved to Pakistan. Out of his teachings came many great students like Maulana Abdus Samie, Dr. Israr Ahmad, and Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Usmani (who led Quaid's funeral.)

Deobandi intelligentsia were pivotal in the establishment of the idea of Pakistani and Muslim exceptionalism and excluvisim which produced Pakistan. After 1971, the Islamic ideology of Pakistan gained further impetus due to their efforts and Pakistan was revived on this belief.

I agree with some of what you've said, but some goodness cannot excuse an underlying virulent sense of judgment (inevitably leading to accusations of biddah and takfeer, which provides the basis for the ideological hate that fuels most terrorist outfits in Pakistan.) I don't want to derail this thread further but Dr. Israr Ahmad and other Deobandis provided a huge intellectual base for many of the arguments used by militant recruiters for anti-State attacks in Pakistan. The Tableeghi Jamaat failed to openly and forcefully condemn AQ and TTP tactics and worldviews.

It is a question about the fundamental emphasis on what's important in a religion; I believe that they misunderstood and misrepresented it. Are they all-bad? Obviously not. Their contributions cannot be forgotten or glossed over, just as you said. The most fundamental thing to understand, in my opinion, is that there is no one final or superior interpretation. This is the very reason that various schools of thought exist (and many other theories of jurisprudence and spirituality within them), yet almost all of whom you mentioned very strongly believed that their way was essentially the only way.

BTW, it was an absolute pleasure reading your response --- intelligent, well-articulated and backed by facts.

How is it fair to affix the title of Traitor to the descendant of a British ally ??

By that measure, the descendants of 18th century Marathas and Kodavas should be also punished as they allied with the Britishers against Tipu Sultan.

Let us not forget that Naseeruddin's brother served in the Indian Army at a high position and other members of his family were in high government service. He says so in the vid in the OP.

This is nice ,RSS goons claiming these Indian Ulma chuma who fights for us on Pakistan borders have weapons in their Mosque
