Six months after the 1962 Chinese aggression on India, the US had contemplated using nuclear weapons in the event of another attack from Beijing as it was determined to prevent an Indian defeat at the hands of the Communists.

The then president John F Kennedy, at a meeting with his top military aides on May 9, 1963, had expressed clear determination not to let Beijing defeat New Delhi, with his defence secretary even talking about using nuclear weapons against China if it launched another attack against India.

These disclosures have come in a just released book ‘Listening In: The Secret White House Recordings of John F Kennedy’ co-authored by Ted Widmer and Caroline Kennedy.

“I gather we’re coming to the defence of Israel and Saudi Arabia. What I think we ought to think about is, (unclear) it’s desirable for us, to give India a guarantee which actually we would carry out. I don’t think there’s any doubt that this country is determined that we couldn’t permit the Chinese to defeat the Indians,” Kennedy said.

“If we would, we might as well get out of South Korea and South Vietnam. So I think that’s what we’ll decide at the time. Now, therefore, I don’t mind making, seeing us make some commitments. Now, if it is politically important,” he said.

Kennedy was quoted by the book as making these remarks in the White House meeting with his Defence Secretary Robert McNamara and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Maxwell Davenport “Max” Taylor.

Kennedy was US President from 1961 until his death in 1963. The book is a selection of audio recordings of Kennedy’s conversations and meetings at the White House.

The recordings have been selected from the hidden recording systems in the Oval Office and in the Cabinet Room installed by Kennedy in July 1962, in an effort to preserve an accurate record of Presidential decision-making in a highly charged atmosphere of conflicting viewpoints, strategies and tactics

I just don't understand our love for these meaningless information points from 50 years ago...

Fact is, we needed a 1962, to realize that non-militarized or pathetically militarized (under socialistic mindset) countries will not have a future... Let's thank the Chinese for the wake up call and check again... Are we ready, if that were to happen again? And, seriously, I mean in conventional sense (not nuclear missiles et all), have we done justice to the opportunity over the last 50 years?

It's just amazing how quickly we run into discussions --- if Russia is our better friend or china's or if Amreeka loves us more than Pakistan and we focus rather low (at times) on what are we capable of, on standalone basis...!

Totally agree.. If we think like this, it would be impossible for any country to improve it's relation with other country.

And talking of AMreeka, prior to '71, Kissinger once retorted that Indira is a cunning ****** .. doesn't mean jack now !! AB agar kal ko sonia ji boli ki mere sasu ma ko gaali di in logon ne, Nuclear deal scrap kar dete hai, tab toh ho liya India ka kaam

Satya vachan (total truth!) ... Nothing is permanent in international relations and those who stay relevant are awarded the most over long term... About time, we realize that and improve our EQ about such things, as a nation!!!

Sonia maidam pe 2014 mei aate hein (read the year in Hindi, if you could... Pun intended)

I often wonder what advantage is it to anyone when old records are declassified ?

In most cases the world has changed so much that ppl have either forgotten the incident / background or just moved on.

Kennedy fucked too many chicks pros whoever he can laid his hands on , but never lost sense of balance.

History shows that Hindus never learn from their mistakes, and I am not talking abt the post independence period but the last 800 years.

I can clearly see history repeating itself in the future too.

Is your mind really so confused and f***** up that you need to bring in religion here?

I don't see the need for linking religion with our failures, but on a side note, you're right about the pacifist attitudes, not many people really concentrate on the lessons from the Gita where Krishna explains to Arjun why violence is necessary, even against those we perceived to once be our family.

At a certain level, you are right... But, I don't think it is about Hindus, it is about our entire sub continent as a society... So, nothing religious, but our individualistic greed as a society is bigger than our collective aspirations

First, there is a mythologies if Dwapar and Treta ages (Lord Rama and Krishna) and if they were true, then how did we (as a society and culture) degrade? Then, a Hindu King - Chandragupta, defeated even the mighty Greeks and spread the Gupta Dynasty and we then divided ourselves once again and lost again. Then Mughals walked right in, Islamized the sub-continent and what happened? They followed the same path - Son killed father, brother killed brother and the whole subcontinent grew weaker. Our same society made 100s of small kingdoms (again, interest of individual and the medieval thinking). Then British came in and the rich ran to them to support them and ensure that the riches kept their wealth while the suck up to the brits. What happened - we were broken as a collective force again.

But, what also is interesting is... Then how did we get independence? Simple, Because, we as a society fought for it. Not as Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs. We had a collective aspiration of freedom and that not only threw out the brits, that also helped immediately combine this patch work of small states into a big nation (and the only failing of that separation from english was that we again got divided on religious lines and had two parts carved out of the larger land mass)...

Moral of the story - It is not about Hindus never learning or something else that is religious. It is about our fallacies as an individualistic society and us as a society (and consequently, all religions in our society) falling to that trap of greed, over and over again and still not learning from our mistakes. That greed, my friend, has nothing to do with religion...
