Shabnam visits the city of lights

KARACHI:
The star whose on-screen chemistry with Nadeem was probably the only thing to give youngsters their Mills & Boons fix back in the 60s, is back. Lollywood actor Shabnam, who is also referred to as the Queen of Lollywood, is visiting Pakistan with her music composer-husband Robin Ghosh.

The way the media is chasing the duo is testimony enough to the fact that time has not been able to corrode their popularity in Pakistan. The couple shot to fame as they gave hit after hit back in the days when film and television were the prime source of entertainment.

Shabnam’s trip, which has been sponsored by state-run television network PTV, came as a pleasant surprise to her fans who had lost all hope of her return to Pakistan. Nonetheless, she is here to attend an event being held in her honour by PTV in Lahore.
On her way to Lahore the actor also planned a short trip to Karachi. During her brief two-day stay, the starlet made sure she paid a visit to the ailing comedian Lehri, visited the Governor House and met actor Garaj Babu.

A friendly reunion

Shabnam visited Lehri at his residence that is secretly tucked away in the residential area near National Institute of Public Administration (Nipa). The veteran claimed with a nostalgic tone, “This meeting is like a flashback for me. Lehri’s face reminds me of all the good times we spent together and I thank Allah for fulfilling my wish of meeting him.”

The actor reminisced the good old days that marked the boom of Lollywood and shared how Lehri turned her shooting experiences into memories. “Lehri saab was a very serious person but he still used to crack jokes and bring comedic lightness on to the sets.”

Shabnam consoled the frail-looking comedian, who complained about his depreciating health and about his unfavourable state of living and said she’d take his matter to the Governor’s house. “Lehri is a dear friend and I pray sincerely for his fast recuperation. He should not lose hope so easily.”

The visit to The Governor House
During her meeting with the Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and while talking to the press within the premises of the Governor House she said, “I feel really happy after talking to the Governor. He expressed his desire to see collaborations between Pakistan and Bangladesh on the grounds of film-making.”

While talking about political and social affiliations with Bangladesh, the Pakistani media quoted the irony that the Bangladesh Cricket Team has been stopped from coming to Pakistan but the duo was given a green signal. To which Ghosh replied, “We believe in the decision making capabilities of the court. The court’s decision must have been in the team’s best interest.”

Pakistan then and now

When asked if the couple felt secure in Pakistan Shabnam stated, “We came here and saw that things are very normal here. Everything is working in sync and I must say the media has grown tremendously since I last came to Pakistan 14 years ago.” Shabnam also added that she “can’t believe this is the same country. If truth be told, for a second I thought I was in some foreign country.”

The actor said that it’s sad that Lollywood did not progress at the speed the rest of the Pakistan did. When asked if she’d ever consider coming back on the silver screen the star said, “I haven’t been offered yet but yes the revival of Lollywood should take place and I will try my best to contribute something to it.” Her husband Ghosh added, “I think other industries within Pakistan should come forward and help in the revival of Lollywood.”

When asked if she is planning to meet Nadeem, the actor said that she in contact with her old friend and will meet him as soon as he gets time.

Lahore’s sleepy studios sadden Shabnam

LAHORE: Legendary film actress Shabnam and her musician husband Robin Ghosh are visiting Lahore after 12 years or so. The once-a-hub-of-film industry city has impressed the duo because of its improved road infrastructure and lush green sideways.

At the same time, the duo is dejected at the closure of film studios and production houses where Shabnam ruled for almost three decades (1960 to 1990).

“I am really sad to know that the most of the film studios in Lahore now wear a deserted look and even one of them is now a godown,” said Shabnam during an interview to Dawn at the Deplix in Defence on Tuesday.

“During my stay in Lahore, I will definitely visit the studios. I have many memories attached to the complex.”

The couple will remain in Lahore for a week. Shabnam, who reigned supreme the Pakistani silver screen in the past, also appealed to the Pakistanis to pray for her health.

Shabnam is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of the Pakistan Television (PTV) Network. The PTV held a classical tribute evening for the couple at the Governor’s House on Saturday in which Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani gave the Lifetime Achievement Award to both Shabnam and Ghosh for their contribution to the film industry.

She was moved by the reception the PTV held for her and warm welcome by the public wherever she went in Karachi and Lahore. She thanked the PTV, her fans, media and people of Pakistan for the love they extended to the couple.

She said her friend Mussarat Misbah was the moving spirit behind her visit. “Misbah contacted and informed me that the PTV wanted to hold a tribute evening for us. In fact she has a great contribution in making this visit possible,” said Shabnam.

About the measures to improve the situation of Pakistan film industry, Shabnam said a coordinated effort by both the film industry and the government could revive it.

“In Bangladesh, the government has been very supportive of the film industry.

When asked would she accept any offer if floated from Pakistan film directors to act in any film, the actress said it would largely depend on the script, director and producer.

She, however, said that she had quit the industry and was leading more a life of a housewife than that of an actress.

She opposed the screening of Indian films in Pakistan, saying that the measure would further add to the woes of the industry already going through a slump. She said that recently in Bangladesh a move was made to screen Indian movies but the entire film industry vehemently opposed the idea and took out demonstrations against it.

“Pakistan has great talent in film making but things have to be streamlined from both the film industry and the government,” she said.

Mr Ghosh said Pakistan had a lot of good singers but the musicians needed to improve. He said he was hopeful the Lollywood would again rise and blossom. Ghosh, who has composed several timeless songs, says he was inspired by music composer Nushad.

He said some film producers had asked him to compose their film music.

“I would love to work with them but film making is a team work; it’s a collage of a good writer, director, producer and so many other things.”

Govt must help revive film industry: Shabnam

KARACHI, May 10: Overwhelmed by the astounding reception, Pakistani film star Shabnam gushed with gratitude at a function organised in honour of her and her husband Robin Ghosh by the Arts Council Karachi and Nigar Weekly on the council’s lawns on Thursday.

Shabnam, who looked and sounded visibly moved by the kind of affection showered on her by the people who had come to see her in large numbers, said she was so happy that she could not find words to express herself. She said she was indebted to two persons — her godfather Ilyas Rasheedi of Nigar Weekly and Waheed Murad for helping her out in her early days in the film industry. (Her first film Samandar was a Waheed Murad production directed by Rafique Rizvi).

She said she was pleasantly surprised that the younger generation in Pakistan knew her, and thanked PTV and the government for bestowing the Lifetime Achievement Award on her. She said such awards should also be given to those Pakistani artists who were alive.

The actress lamented that the Pakistan film industry had become defunct, and said she could not go to the film studios in Lahore during her recent visit to the city because had she visited those deserted studios it would have hurt her. She requested the government to help save the film industry so that she and people like her could again get a chance to work in films.

Robin Ghosh in his typical gentle style tried to go down memory lane and found it difficult. He fondly remembered the time when Mehdi Hasan Khan used to rehearse with him, and rued that those days would not return. He said Mehnaz had a good voice and while composing songs for her he would lower the scale.

He told the gathering that the singer could also cook well. He claimed there was talent in Pakistan. He informed the audience there was a film industry in this part of the subcontinent (Lahore) before Bombay (Mumbai) became prominent. He said Noor Jehan, Rasheed Atre and G. A. Chishti used to live in Calcutta (Kolkata). He urged the government to take steps for the revival of film business.

When Robin Ghosh was about to leave the podium, the host of the show Iqbal Latif requested him to sing the famous song ‘Piyar bhare dau sharmeeley nain’ which he had composed for a Pakistani movie. The music composer obliged and sang the mukhra of the song very well.

Film actor Nadeem said his success in films had a lot to do with Robin Ghosh’s music and Shabnam’s acting. He said he had done countless films with Shabnam and the credit went to the actress for the success of those films. He remarked that Shabnam was a sincere, untiring and dedicated actress who did films in a language (Urdu) that was not her mother tongue.

He said Shabnam and Ghosh might have returned to Pakistan after 14 years, he believed they had actually never gone anywhere. He seconded one of earlier speakers’ opinion that there should be co-productions between Pakistan and Bangladesh and Bangladeshi films should be dubbed into Urdu so that they could be screened in Pakistan.

Actor Mustafa Qureshi said the way Shabnam had met Lehri and Zeba (in Lahore) he would also like to visit those actors and technicians who once worked in Pakistani films and now lived in Bangladesh. He said if Indian films could be shown in Pakistan, Bengali films with Urdu dubbing could also be screened in the country.

Sindh IT minister Raza Haroon, who was the chief guest of the event, hailed Shabnam and Robin Ghosh as two legends of the Pakistan film industry and welcomed them to Karachi. He resented that the couple had gone to Bangladesh, and commented that had we not been unjust to our Bengali brothers, they would never have opted for Bangladesh.

Aslam Ilya, Saeed Rizvi, Munawwar Saeed, Ahmed Shah, Ajaz Farooqi, Bindiya, Salma Murad, Alamgir, Arshad Mehmood, Zeba Shahnaz and Nawab Ahsan also spoke. Iqbal Latif conducted the programme.
