Melbourne Renegades take a swipe at Shane Warne's return, say Shahid Afridi is a better T20 bowler

Melbourne Renegades, who will play out of Etihad Stadium this summer, tried to sign Shane Warne before the 42-year-old decided to join cross-town rivals Melbourne Stars.

The Renegades say they simply couldn't afford to sign Warne under the salary cap.

But instead of lamenting missing out on the greatest spin bowler in history, the Renegades claim they have a better bowler in their ranks: Pakistan leg-spinner Shahid Afridi.

Despite Warne's distinguished international career and impressive record in the Indian Premier League, Renegades coach Simon Helmot says Afridi is "the best T20 spinner going around".


Renegades captain Andrew McDonald, a former teammate of Warne for Victoria, has also delivered a not-so-subtle dig at the Stars' marquee signing.

"We just hope that Warnie is the Warnie that bowled at the MCG some four years ago, because there's nothing worse than someone coming out of retirement and not being near their best in such a competition," McDonald said.

"So hopefully Warnie's up to scratch."

Bushrangers players form the bulk of Melbourne’s franchises, but Helmot believes state allegiences will be forgotten once the Big Bash League begins on December 16

"Mark my words, once we're out of the Bushrangers environment, especially when we play each other on January 7 at the MCG, it's going to be gloves off,” he said.

In T20 format , Afridi is way more handy than Warne or anyone else for that matter . . . .

HAHAHAH what a joke, Warne played t20 in the last leg of his career, Aridi cannot play anything else other than t20 because he wont last longer than that anyways. Aridi is good but even comparing him to Warne is joke. Compare their Test records and the truth is more than obvious.

No one is saying that Afridi is better bowler duhhh . . . .Just as Yuvi is "better" option for T20 than Sachin..doesn't mean that Sachin is any less but in T20 ..you need utility players more than you need specialists....

I think this is not a fair comparison. There is no match between the two, Warne is a legend whereas Afridi only a very good player. Considering as of today, Afridi has been in best of bowling form of whole career and Warne has finished his career. Fielding has always been Afridi's strong point therefore Afridi may be a better choice today but comparison of careers !! no way! have a heart man.

No doubt he is a good player,one of my favourite but he need to be a bit professional..
