Afghan army fires mortar shells into Pakistan

PESHAWAR/MULTAN: Afghan forces fired 10 mortar shells on Sunday that landed 800 metres inside Pakistan’s South Waziristan Agency, security sources said.

“No loss of life or damage to property was, however, reported,” they added. “Afghan National Army fired 10mortar shells on civilians in Angoor Adda area (last Pakistani town on border with Afghanistan) between 1030 hours to 1300 hours at Saturday night,” sources spoke on the condition of anonymity. They said Pakistan lodged “protest” with the Afghan government through military and other channels. Angoor Adda has been hit regularly by the NATO and Afghan forces, which remain in the hot pursuit of fleeing Taliban.” However, firing from across the border leads to civilian casualties and Pakistani forces off and on return the fire,” sources elaborated. Recent cross-border shelling triggered protests by Kabul and denials by Islamabad.

Responding to firing by Afghan forces into Pakistan’s territory, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that the government had taken up the issue, and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and the foreign secretary visited Kabul to discuss cross-border shelling by Afghan security forces. Talking to reporters in Multan, he said, “The government of Pakistan has protested over border violations and taken up the matter with the Afghan government at diplomatic level.” staff report/app

PESHAWAR (Agencies) - At least six mortar shells which were fired from Afghanistan side landed on a mountain in Barmel area of South Waziristan on Sunday sparking fear among the locals.
Official sources said six mortar shells landed on a mountain situated in tehsil Barmel but caused no damage. Pakistan lodged a strong protest over the issue with the Afghan government and asked them to take stern action for stopping such incidents in future. Earlier, militants from the Afghanistan side had attacked security forces’ check-posts inside Pakistan’s territory and also targeted civilians dwelling on the Pak-Afghan border, inflicting heavy losses.
On the other hand, the federal government has decided to replace police with the border forces to monitor the Pak-Afghan border areas in Chitral and Upper Dir, officials said on Sunday.
According to officials, the decision was taken in the light of recommendation of provincial government. The Levies force and Frontier Corps would be deployed at border areas of Upper Dir while Chitral Scots and Chitral Border Force would replace the police in border areas of Chitral.
Officials said Afghan militants recently had penetrated into Pakistani areas and attacked police posts. Khyber Pakhtunkhaw government requested the federal government to deploy border forces at these areas to avoid future attacks by Afghan terrorists. Source said federal government accepted the request and ordered interior ministry to take action in this regard.
Meanwhile, officials said on Sunday that the government would install mobile biometric system at Torkham border with Afghanistan by next week.
According to Interior ministry officials, the equipment has been brought to Torkham border where mobile biometric system will be installed by next week in presence of interior ministry officials.
This system would keep data of all people crossing the border, officials said, adding it would help to overcome the terrorism and militancy.
Pakistan has already installed biometric system on Chaman border with Afghanistan and would extend it to Bajaur Agency, Miran Shah, Mohmad Agency and to other areas along the Afghan border.
