GENEVA: Afghanistan will become a new Vietnam for the United States as it was repeating the same mistakes made in Indochina, Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said in an interview telecast on Wednesday.

“The Americans will have the same success in Afghanistan as in Vietnam,” he told French-language Swiss television, a day after an international donors’ conference in Kabul.​

“Years ago the Soviet Union made exactly the same mistake. Many many people were killed and it finally pulled out,” he said. “History repeats itself. We know Afghanistan. We know that Afghanistan will never submit to foreign armies.”

Also on Wednesday a senior commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards warned that the United States and General David Petraeus, who took over command of 140,000 US and Nato troops in Afghanistan on July 4, would be engulfed by “terror” in Afghanistan.

“The presence of Petraeus in Afghanistan will increase terrorism and seal the expansion of American failures” in the war-ravaged country, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying on the website of the Guards.

Washington has in the past accused Tehran of providing low-level help to some militants in Afghanistan, but the former US and Nato commander in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, said in May that most of Tehran’s role was legitimate.

and that's the surprising part, that America along with the worlds finest and well trained armies isn't able to subdue the Taliban, rather the Taliban who have not a single ally in the world is able to humiliate all these powerful Armies and bog them down!

Would you like it if they flatten the entire Afghanistan regardless of not targetting civilians in specific? Then you'd cry that USA "is an evil this or that". You know, there's this Swiss guy on the forum whose comments I was reading in international affairs.

You gotta take a look at what he's mentioned since you won't trust or like what we Indians talk.

When you have a bunch of terrorists hiding behind and blending among civilians, it is difficult to show sheer military force. Why not ask some soldiers of your place who have conducted operations against Taliban in your country? They'd tell you.

I know enough facts. There are some perverted soldier individuals who want to see blood flow and commit war crimes. You blame that on entire contingent that is there? Taliban are the most barbaric terrorist organization that has existed till date. Wonder what's causing you to put them on a higher pedestal than NATO?

Taliban gave refuge to our Indian Airlines hijackers and we didn't have foreign bases for rapid deployment of commandos then. You think NATO will all their military bases and equipment will not respond to these evil critters?

And BTW, do you think fighting Taliban head-on in battlefield would be that difficult for 10 professional armed forces? Check your logic; the simple reason why Taliban are able to cause damage are to blend in with the people around and use them for protecting themselves.

over 60% of the civilian casualties are by the taliban attack, either suicide or other methods.

the same charges of "Americas Vietnam" were voiced about Iraq. And look how wrong they were. Afghanistan will take longer to turn around becuase it was so much more %#@!*^ up. But I have confidence in the end a more stable Afghanistan will happen. And pay no attention to supposed deadlines. In the end the U.S. is not leaving till certain goals are met.

I never supported Taliban style of governace and dictates. It is too rigid to be practical.

My point is about the duplicity of words and actions of ISAF (so to say).

What has the ISAF acheived other than holding Kabul? the rest of Afghanistan is still under taliban rule.

The morale of the ISAF army is swiftly deteriarating, and the "boys" wanna go home.

The Brits lost in the 1850s, the Russians in the 1990s and now its uncle Sam's turn. the only Empire to ever control Afghanistan, to some extent were the Masidons, when Alexander made a loose treaty with the Afghan war lord Oxyartes; after realising that the 3 years of fighting was going no where.

the big question is, if the Americans don't implement an exit strategy soon and gracefully, will they compound their loss in war with loss of the UNITES STATES? Just like the Brits lost their colonies and the USSR lost the CIS. Unites States is also at the risk of disintegration
