I'm baffled by some people's responses here. Their personal hatred blinds them to obvious solutions.

Calling all Afghans snakes that should be crushed doesn't change the fact that they are our neighbors and we can't really do anything of the sort some want.

At best you can start doing air attacks on them but they've withstood those from a vastly richer more powerful nation for nearly two decades.

What happens when we close their borders? It will give Iranians greater leverage over them and they will go to them as well as the Indians.

What then? How will you crush them like cockroaches and snakes if they find alternative routes and partners? Then you have yet another openly hostile neighbor and no leverage to get things done.

Alternatively, we could actually understand that having good relations with Afghanistan is in our favour. If they get good trade deals from us, if they get financial assistance from us as well as food and medical help, they become more dependent on us. They will want to, eventually, have good relations with us because of their own interests.

Besides, the common people there have suffered enough. They too deserve a chance at a peaceful life. Becoming partners in peace ensures they have a stake in our peace and stability as well. Long term we could get a good ally on our border. Or at the very least not an enemy.
