Guyz...A comment from Dawn, I found interesting regarding this decision....

Since they want to strengthen trade ties with India and Indian products will be very expensive due to long route through chabahar port. This tax is placed so indian products can compete...Afghans will place many new taxes on Pakistani products in coming days.

Ah! this reminds me of GoP's import of peanuts from India in the year when the local crop was already surplus. This was presumed to be because people in power wanted to export some of their crops to India and India in return asked for buying their own local surplus product in return. So, it happened and the happy farmers suffered big time. I experienced it first hand as our produce had to be stored in empty poultry farm sheds as their was no buyer in market willing to buy at the price that could give us a decent profit. So eventually market fell and poor farmers lost millions.

Another incident was of bananas few years ago - this is more relevant to the Dawns post. Local banana produce was stopped from leaving Karachi Fruit market and left to rot. Soon the prices started soaring in rest of the country, and as the prices hiked up enough for the Indian (expensive) banana to be competitive in local market, it was brought in.

Pathetic game play by few beneficiaries result in suffering for millions!
