DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Afghan authorities have closed the Angoor Adda border crossing in South Waziristan hours after it was handed over to them, it emerged on Tuesday.

The neighbouring country also claimed about 10km inside Pakistan as its territory and demanded its control, officials and sources said.

The border closure has caused great inconvenience to thousands of people, including women and children, who have found themselves stranded in the scorching heat amid hundreds of truck and trailers loaded with goods disallowed by the Afghan authorities to cross the border.

“We have taken over the control of Bab-i-Waziristan post [Angoor Adda border crossing] where the Afghan flag has been hoisted to herald the development,” an Afghan diplomatic official posted at the post told Dawn.

“However, the border has been closed till further orders from Kabul. Right now no one was allowed from our side for any entry or exit. The Afghan forces now guard the crossing round-the-clock.”

When asked about the reason behind the closure of the crossing just after taking over its control, he refused to comment saying he was not the official of the “ranking high enough to respond to such a query. The decision to keep the gate closed has come from Kabul and we are following it till further orders”.

Pakistan handed over the contentious Angoor Adda border crossing in South Waziristan to Afghan authorities on Saturday. The Inter-Services Public Relations called the move a “strategic intent to improve border management”.

The gesture was envisioned to bring momentum to the establishment of peace and stability along the Pak-Afghan border.

“On both sides of the border, most people belong to the Ahmedzai Wazir tribe,” said a tribal elder. “We came to know through our contacts in Afghanistan that they [Afghan forces] have told their people that they would not open the border until they get the control of the area inside Pakistan.”

More than five-decade-old border crossing facility at Angoor Adda, 35km off South Waziristan’s regional headquarters of Wana, has been a bone of contention between the two countries ever since it was built nearly a year ago. The gate and the compound were manned by Pakistan Army personnel until recently.

On July 1 last year, the issue had led to an exchange of fire between the two sides, resulting in the death of an Afghan police border guard and injuries to two Pakistani soldiers. The Afghan government had summoned Pakistan’s envoy to lodge a protest over the incident.

The recent accord between the two sides brought relief to a large extent to people on both sides of border, but the closure has faded all their hopes away.

Yes please hand it over. I am sure the military must be thinking who is going to question them.

For strategic purposes we should serve Pakistan on plate to these low life scums. Just check the audacity of the countries like Afghanistan and Iran . If we cant stand against these two countries then we must accept the reality we dont deserve to be a nuclear country .

Enough of this brotherhood . Everyone is for himself in this world

Afghans will never get an inch of pakistan ...pakistan should throw all the refugees back to Afghanistan ...Afghans Govrt should first of all free their land from talibans .

These afghans claim halfnof Pakistan as their territory. Sorry but we have to draw the line here. When we closed torkham border for fencing Afghans were crying but when they have closed the angur adda pass they are cheering. Bunch of hypocrites and backstabbers.

We must answer back to the afghan that we will not give them anymore land and if they continue this rubbish we will escalate things.

Good job Afghanistan , taking back its territory from its oppressing neighbor.

While your are at Throw in Kashmir as well. Like you said taking back its territory from oppressing neighbour. Also Khalistan is craving freedom as well.

What the F*** good job ? they have no control of 15 / 32 provinces.
And control you r kashmir and Asam first. I heard two days back Pakistani Flag was hoisted in Kashmir and 6 army men killed in Asam . wakeup kid.

Pakistan should enforce the Durand Line more strictly and look towards maintaining our position or even moving forward rather than back (as per some sources the actual Durand Line stretches further into Afghanistan occupied areas, see maps below). Sure these Afghanis may not recognize the Durand Line, but if they are going to backstab us when ever an olive branch is handed out, then who gives a s*** what they think. The world recognizes the Durand Line as the actual border between Pakistan and Afghanistan (based on the universally accepted concept of uti possidetis i.e. that a former colonized nation inherits the borders left in place by its former colonial occupier).

I have always had soft spot for Afghanistan and Iran. I accept there is no hope for our countries at least for generation or two. Yeh your right. Time to seal the Durand Line. Not a mule should be able to move across.

Furthermore I believe the olive branch has failed. No more diplomacy. Time for guns to come out. If I had it my way I would not sit around. I would grab the initiative and make most of the horrible situation. In other words things can't get worse than they are betweem Af-Pak. I would attack the Wakhan corridor and capture it. It could be done within 48 hours.

That would for the next 2-3 decades offer direct access to Tajikistan and when relations improve down the road in 2-3 decades use that Wakhan as bargaining chip. Take a leaf out of the Isreali way of doing things.

Dont be miss guided. The handing over of the post was not about what Afghans claimed but what Pakistan decided as a “strategic intent to improve border management”.
We are a bunch of emotional people who are so easy to play with. People will twist the words and try to flaming the whole episode but instead of getting derailed one must understand the facts and reply accordingly. I have seen your posts in the past and am sure that you will be able to do exactly that.

Right now, I seriously doubt their desire to protect downtown Islamabad.
