Afghan women teacher in Pakistan wins UN prize

Aqeela Asifi, 49, left Kabul with her family in 1992, and ended up living in the remote refugee settlement of Kot Chandna in the Punjab region of Pakistan, where most girls were excluded from the classroom.

Despite few resources, she won over the community and persuaded parents to send their daughters to school.

Today more than a thousand children attend permanent schools in the village, said UNHCR, although around 80 percent of Afghan refugee children in Pakistan are still out of school.

The Nansen Refugee Award has been won in the past by Eleanor Roosevelt and Luciano Pavarotti. The award ceremony takes place next month in Geneva, and the winner gets $100,000 to fund a project complementing their existing work.

“When you have mothers who are educated, you will almost certainly have future generations who are educated,” said Asifi. “I wish for the day when people will remember Pakistan, not for war, but for its standard of education.”

The lack of opportunities for girls in education in the region has been highlighted by campaigner Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani teenager who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for her work promoting girls’ right to education. She was shot in the head by a gunman from the Taliban in 2012.

There are currently 2.6 million Afghan refugees living in exile, making them the largest refugee community in the world, according to UNHCR.

Since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001, millions have returned home, but insecurity still remains. The Taliban recently launched a wave of attacks in Kabul, killing more than 50 and souring relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Afghanistan and Pakistan have long accused each other of sheltering Taliban and other Islamist militants who conduct attacks inside their territory, charges both deny.

“Investing in refugee education will allow children to play a part in breaking the cycle of instability and conflict,” said António Guterres, head of UNHCR. – Agencies

What a lady. Hope she goes far in her mission. :-)
I hope that day isn't far... If we only get just one government that would sincerely pay attention towards Pakistan's academic institutions then that day becomes a reality.

That is why I say not all Afghan refugees are bad. Actually it is a minority that is problematic, the rest are good hardworking people and she is one such example

Also most the afghans have integrated themselves in the labor force of Pakistan, which means removing them all would only hurt our cause.

My family in Islamabad has only nice nice things to say about Afghans, that they are imandar and mehenti, painting everyone in the same way just shows your own ignorance. They forget that these people they keep saying should be 'kicked out' are mostly women and children, who have done nothing wrong and deserve to be treated with respect, we are not a welfare state thats feeding them for free, they do jobs like the rest of us to make ends meet.

Yep soviet era Afghans have completely integrated themselves into our society

@django @Shamain @WAJsal
Their are some very fine and honorable folks amongst the refugees, their are exceptions but what i can say from personal experience is that i rarely had problems with them except on one occasion but thats another story.

I am talking about soviet era refugees in Pakistan not those in Afghanistan man i have met ordinary refugees in Mirpur,Lahore and Islamabad and an absolute majority were peace loving and law abiding folks yes we need to kick out the trouble makers but i dont know i just cant support forcefull expulsion of Afghanis after 30 years in Pakistan(the recent one,s should be repatriated though)

It would be sheer hypocracy if we criticize forcefull expulsion of refugees from europe while doing it ourself

Oh bhi dont compare Pakistan with Europe. They are not overpopulated, they have resources and economy to support refugees, they have proper laws and order where they can track and trace every activity of individuals unlike in Pakistan
