Afghan Taliban leader urges Afghans to plant more trees

The leader of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has urged Afghans to plant more trees.

In a statement, he called on civilians and fighters to "plant one or several fruit or non-fruit trees for the beautification of Earth and the benefit of almighty Allah's creations".

Afghanistan has a severe problem of deforestation. Trees are cut down for heating and illegal timber sales.

Statements from the Taliban on environmental issues are rare.

Akhundzada, who became leader of the Taliban last May, has a stronger reputation as a religious leader than a military chief.

Sunday's "special message", carried on official Taliban outlets, was in stark contrast to the more familiar fiery rhetoric against the Afghan government and its Nato coalition backers.

"Tree plantation plays an important role in environmental protection, economic development and beautification of earth," the Taliban leader said, in a report carried by the Afghan Taliban Voice of Jihad website.

"Planting trees and agriculture are considered actions which hold both worldly good and benefit as well as immense rewards in the hereafter."

A spokesman for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, described the statement as an attempt to deceive public opinion and to distract from the Taliban's "crimes and destruction".

Come on man he just asked to plant trees and being a Muslim that is a duty. But it was more of message that Taliban are thinking for the long term. This new attitude of Afghan Taliban is good for Pakistan as they are more friendly to Pakistan.

Taliban is like any terro driven organization... they should not be taken as friend. Why you may ask? Bc they do not care about you or whatever you represent, they are ppl who need power and will do anything for that. Khawarji to the bone. Never forget who they really are, never.
They may want to buy themselfs a new image, but in the End they are the same, theyused children and innocent for their own goals. They had their chance after The soviet and screwed like a Virgin Princess.
In their eyes, if you're not one of them you a Kuffar, simple as that.
So no they are not your "friend" neither any "sane" muslim around the world, they are the same as Al Qaeda or ISIS, khawarji who need to find their creator faster than they could kill innocent.

We need them to counter ISIS in Afghanistan and I don't see any difference in Afghan Gov and terrorist. So friendly terrorist are better than non friendly terrorists. What can you do when you have all Khawarji. Afghan Gov supports TTP who are an enemy to my country.

Don't support neither of them , Build a Wall or shut down transit. And kill every terro rat, that may want to put a feet in Pakistan. Simple as that. No need to support one side, a Mad Dog always bite his master, it's only a Question of Time.
And ISIS is only a Franchise... no one came from Iraq or Syria.. they were Ex-talibans, new name only...
