Afghan refugees celebrate August 14
By Sohail Raza Khattak
KARACHI: While the majority of Pakhtuns will be busy earning livelihoods for their families, some including the Afghan refugees will celebrate the Independence Day with simplicity.
Interestingly, many Afghan refugees, having lived in Pakistan for several years and some even born and raised here, consider themselves as Pakistanis.
In this regard, Daily Times talked with Afghan refugees living near the Al-Asif Square, Sohrab Goth.
Zamrak Khan, 23, an Afghan refugee hailing from Pul-i-Khumri, the capital city of Baghlan Province, will celebrate August 14 with his family. I was born in Pakistan, and I grew up here, therefore I think Pakistan is my own country, and I am as much a Pakistani as you, he said, adding that his family had lived in this country for 27 years now and they did not want to go back to Afghanistan.
Another Afghan refugee, Meedaar, 41, said he bought flags for his children and also hoisted a big flag on the rooftop of his house. I am very thankful to the Pakistani government for the shelter and respect they have provided us. We are getting everything we need here, safe from the Americans and Taliban both, he added.
Speaking about Independence Day celebrations, Suleman, 19, whose parents came from Dasht-e-Laila said, I have never been to Afghanistan. I have only known life in this country. I have heard about Afghanistan but I consider myself a Pakistani and I will also celebrate the independence of my country on August 14.
