U.S. Army Sappers, Czech EOD hunt for IEDs

LOGAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Sapper Soldiers of the 541st Engineer Company, 54th Engineer Battalion Task Force Dolch, along with Czech Republic army Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams spend their days scraping at the dirt, tirelessly searching for hidden improvised explosive devices in rough and gruelling terrain to make roads and transit ways safe for coalition forces and Afghan civilians in Logar Province, Afghanistan.


Logar Province is fertile with dangers of all types - mines, insurgent small-arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and IEDs. The terrain is a mix of dusty dirt alleys, ploughed soil fields and rough roads that can easily conceal explosives. These conditions provide an ample amount of danger and work for U.S. Route Clearance Patrol Soldiers and Czech EOD troops.

Program partners PRT, Afghans to complete district water storage tank

PANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Bazarak Community Development Council with help from the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team’s Civil Affairs section finished refurbishing a drinking and irrigation water storage tank for the Bazarak District, Afghanistan.

The project is a part of the ‘small projects, big impact’ program run by the PRT, where up to $5,000 is used to purchase materials for civil reconstruction projects. The Afghan people of the area who will benefit from the project, provide the labor and the remainder of the materials. ​

PAKTIKA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Sixth grade is no longer the limit when it comes to education for girls in east Paktika.

Inside the dome-shaped structure that resembles a giant soccer ball, 14 girls sat in desks studying their Dari language textbooks prior to the ceremony. The Afghan National Army chief for Balish Kalay and his soldiers provided security alongside Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team security forces Soldiers.


For added safety, the middle school was placed adjacent to the primary school within the security wall. The structure, which arrived in Afghanistan in easy-to-assemble pieces, was donated by the Lamia Afghan Foundation, but was constructed by local Afghans.​

PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Task Force Redhorse military police mentors conducted a 5-day accelerated training course with the Afghan National Police at Vehicle Patrol Base Dandar, located in Koh-e Safi district.
Although it was not the first training session at the ANP station, it was the first conducted since the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Task Force Wolverines, conducted sessions in 2010, said ANP Lt. Col. Gul Padsha, the ANP station commander.

“We are very thankful for the training,” he said through an interpreter. “Every time the Americans come to train, we learn something new.”​

NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the Nangarhar Provincial Reconstruction Team met with officials from the province’s Public Health Directorate at the Behsood District Center May 7 to discuss health issues across Nangarhar and ways to better connect provincial officials with their district counterparts.

The provincial government distributed more than 40,000 Pashtu textbooks to schools in five districts as part of a plan to re-establish and build the education program within Paktika Province


Dr. Ehsanullah, the provincial director of education started the initiative for the new school year. He worked with Task Force Currahee, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division’s development team to assist with distributing the textbooks to several of the district centers.

The textbooks cover core curriculum including spelling, math, social studies, beginner dari, handwriting, life skills and Islamic studies.​

Task Force White Eagle Polish military police shared techniques with Afghan instructors while preparing Afghan National Police force recruits for the Police Academy in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan,


Exercises on operating checkpoints began in the classroom where instructors explained the procedures for standing up a CP. Then students went to the tactical training area, where they reviewed the manuals step-by-step.

“Today we practiced primarily searching vehicles and people,” said ANP instructor Afghan Army Lt. Mirzagul Alikozai.

KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Iowa National Guard’s 734th Agribusiness Team completed 18 small-scale cash-for-work canal cleaning projects serving an equal number of villages May 4.
The projects employed several hundred men for more than two weeks in April. Each project cost less than $2,000, but village elders said each project in their area had a significant impact.

“This was excellent,” said Mohammed Rahim, an elder from Thesha, a village south of Asadabad, the provincial capital. “We got our canal cleaned, and young men got paid for their work.”​

These photos remind me of my trip to Quetta, this rugged terrain and the faces of thees people are very similiar to those we saw in Balochistan.

I hope one day peace will prevail in Afghanistan and our western provinces and I wil be able to visit at least southern Afghanistan provinces like Qandahar or Helmand which are near to Karachi.

PANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team attended the grand opening ceremony of the Baba Ali Girls School in Dara District, Afghanistan.

The school can host more than 150 Afghan female students and is a part of a three-school complex which includes a boy’s school.

The Dara Community Development Council, a group of Afghans who address the needs of their community, proposed the school to their local government, but there was no money to fund the project. Hearing this, the PRT decided to take on the endeavour.​

PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Women from various districts throughout the conservative Pashtun province of Paktya gathered to voice their concerns at a women’s shura hosted by the director of Paktya’s Department of Women’s Affairs, Halima Khazan, at the Gardez Women’s Development Center.


More than 50 women attended the shura and discussed topics including education, healthcare, midwife training and selling products in the local bazaars.​
