KABUL: A soldier with NATO's US-led coalition in Afghanistan was killed by a man in Afghan army uniform on Sunday, a spokesman for the mission said, in the latest so-called "green-on-blue" attack.

The death takes the number of foreign troops killed by Afghans they were working with to at least 19 this year, in at least 13 separate attacks.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against coalition service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing one service member," NATO'S International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

"The individual who opened fire was killed when coalition forces returned fire."

ISAF, which does not list its wounded in any attack, gave no further details and said the nationality of the dead soldier would be announced in his home country.

The shooting is the latest in an increasing number of attacks by Afghan soldiers turning their weapons against NATO troops who are helping Kabul fight a decade-long insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists.

Some of the assaults are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated Afghan army ranks, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between the allied forces.

Little more than a week ago, an American soldier, two Afghan troops and an interpreter died when an Afghan special forces soldier opened fire on his US allies in the southern province of Kandahar.

In a separate attack on the same day, two Afghan policemen turned their weapons on US troops at a military post in in the same province. No ISAF troops were killed, but both attackers were shot dead in return fire.

In a separate statement Sunday, ISAF announced that one coalition service member died in a roadside bomb attack in the east of the country, without giving any further details. (AFP)

US military orders troops to fall in line after misconduct

WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Friday called on US troops to tighten up discipline and display “integrity” after a series of public relations disasters that he said could play into the hands of America’s enemies. Panetta, echoing a message from Army and Marine Corps leaders, said the misconduct related only to a small percentage of the force but that digital technology magnified any incident, posing a threat to the military’s image.

“These days, it takes only seconds, seconds, for a picture, a photo to suddenly become an international headline,” he told hundreds of troops at Fort Benning, Georgia.“And those headlines can impact the mission that we’re engaged in, they can put your fellow service members at risk, they can hurt morale, they can damage our standing in the world and they can cost lives.”

The Pentagon chief appealed to the troops to uphold the highest standards of conduct.
“I need every one of you, every one of you, and all of your fellow service members, to always display the strongest character, the greatest discipline, and the utmost integrity in everything you do,” he said in a televised speech. Panetta’s trip to Fort Benning followed a string of damaging incidents, including a video of Marines urinating on Taliban corpses, photos of soldiers posing with body parts and the burning of Korans that sparked deadly riots in Afghanistan.

The high-profile public relations setbacks showed “a lack of judgment, a lack of professionalism, and a lack of leadership,” he said.
The Pentagon had previously portrayed the misconduct as isolated cases of bad behavior. But comments from military chiefs and Panetta signal the top brass believes discipline has to be bolstered across the armed forces.

Senior military officers have long voiced worries about the effect of years of protracted ground wars on the all-volunteer force, amid a spike in suicides, divorce, mental health problems, and substance abuse among troops. The incidents in Afghanistan have not only aggravated relations with Kabul but threatened to undermine already declining support for the war in Afghanistan among Americans, according to former officers and analysts. In his speech, Panetta said the US military’s power ultimately depended not on weaponry but on the quality and behavior of people in uniform.

America's adventure in Afghanistan has gone horribly wrong , there is break down of trust between the arrogant US forces and their partners in afghanistan .. afghan security personnel have started turning their guns on the Americans , such type incidents only get reported when the invading soldier is killed but if the soldier is injured in such an attack then it is not reported. As more time passes , americans will get more frustrated ( and even more arrogant ) in the face of failures they are having in Afghansitan.

Either america gets out of afghanistan now or forever perish

Yeah..a pakistani should be understanding that proverb better than anyone else. :)

it can be said even more on bharath, but the occasion is inappropriate isnt it
