Afghan elements perpetrating terror in Pakistan: PM

ISLAMABAD: Days after the Bacha Khan University attack in Charsadda, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said elements in Afghanistan are carrying out terror attacks in Pakistan.

“We did not accuse anyone after Charsadda attack; however, cross-border terrorism must stop,” the premier said while speaking to media in London on Sunday.

In response to a question regarding the Pathankot attack, the prime minister said he “personally asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide us intelligence and we will investigate it.”

We are working on leads and will soon bring the investigation before media, added the premier.

Regarding the continuing National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism, Nawaz said the government was implementing it across the country but admitted progress had often been slow.

“In certain areas of NAP the progress is slow, but in many other areas work has been started,” he said.

The prime minister added that Pakistan supported peace and stability in Afghanistan.

“The quadrilateral group is working to bring back peace in Afghanistan as the only way out to the Afghan conflict is through dialogue.”

In response to another question, the PM said Pakistan took the decision to mediate in the Saudi-Iran conflict by itself, which was lauded by world leaders.

“Effects of the mediation will soon be visible to everyone,” he added.

We need concrete action now. We have heard enough speeches and condemnations. It is an established fact that the Afghan soil is used by both Afghan and Indian elements to sow terror and bloodshed on Pak soil. Talks with the Afghans hasn't resulted in any reduction in terror attacks. We need to make it abundantly clear that terror attacks emanating from Afghanistan will have grave consequences for any future relationship between our countries. Secondly, we need to convey that we are going to destroy terrorist factories and hideouts inside Afghanistan by all means. If the Afghans think that they can get away by providing terror sanctuaries to anti-Pak elements they are gravely mistaken. Enough is enough.

Talk is cheap. Action speaks louder than words. We need to secure the porous border at all cost and we need to deport criminal Afghan elements who are used to carry out suicide attacks. We have to begin somewhere and this would be a good starting point.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. In any case, Dialogue can only go so far, what we need now is action. There is trust deficit on both sides and you cannot just hope to box everything off with a one liner like "dialogue". We should seriously be thinking about national security and interest. CPEC, IPIPL, KKH, NAP did all of this go out of the window?

So what we are suppose to do now Mr Nawaz Shareef? sit on our butts and wait for these monsters to hit our next school and kill our children at point blank ranges?
