ZARANJ (PAN): Five remote-controlled aircraft made by an Afghan on Wednesday made their test flight at the civil airport in southwestern Nimroz province.

“I have been working on making remote-controlled aircraft over the past six years. The planes are different from each other in weight and size,” Zmarai Hilali, the innovator who heads the provincial water and energy department, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

"One aircraft is 2.5 metres long and can fly at a speed of 70 kilometres per hour at a 7,000 metres altitude and can carry 15 kilograms of weight," said Hilali, who used cork, wood and fabrics for making the plane.

Two of the aircraft consumed petrol and the rest are powered by small batteries, he said. “The planes can fly high but the problem is they disappear and cannot be controlled,” explained Hilali, who graduated from the engineering faculty of Kabul University.

About his future plans, the 24-year-old said he was working on a three-metre-long plane that would be flown by a pilot.

Governor Abdul Karim Brahvi, who saw Hilali flying his airplanes at the airport, said the government was ready to support the engineer.

The only way Afghanistan is able to come out of its miseries is to invest more and more in science and technology education. Fortunately there are fairly advanced nations surrounding it and its situation is not like an African country. Pakistan and Iran do have the capability to make joint ventures and Afghans should get serious and involve themselves in regional science and technology affairs.

Thats the way things should be done! Rather than crying and blaming others of their miseries, one should fight back in everyway possible,no matter how small!

Congrats to afghanistan and the guy who made this stuff.

That is the short term plan. They have been kicking out invaders for thousands of years now but themselves have always lived in misery. It is time for them to have a plan after they kick out the invader and not going back to stone age waiting for another invader to emerge. We would like a prosperous and stable Afghanistan on our border not one that becomes a colony of one or the other other whose only export is terror and drugs.

Good points you have mentioned we are really surrounded by high tech countries I hope Afghans involve and get the maximum from neighbors.

Well said.

These planes may be very basic to some people and also laughable for some lunatics but I dare any sci fi challenger to come in "Afghanistan" and make such plan from scratch with no "Google", "Tutorials", "Trainer", without all necessary tools and also in the middle of fight between Taliban and US/NATO.

This guy has taken a step towards his progressive future and he will need some time to come back and surprise everyone.

Children's toy?
This thing flies at 70 km/hr! Too fast for a childrens toy! It can carry 15 kg of payload.

I respect it because i simply can't make such a thing myself. Also,it comes from a war torn nation, where resources are obviously minimum. Clearly it deserves respect.
