Aero India 2017 - A Curtain Raiser
The 11th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition – Aero India 2017 will be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru from 14th to 18th February 2017.
Aero India which began in 1996, has carved a niche for itself as a premium aerospace and aviation exhibition in the international arena and has become one of the most sought after exhibitions in the Asian region in terms of participation from across the globe. The event is being organized and conducted by the Defence Exhibition Organisation (DEO).
The highlights of this year’s show are:
(i) Participation from 270 Indian Companies and 279 foreign companies. That is a total of 549 companies.
(ii) The total area of the show has grown from 24,403 sqm to 27,678 sqm this year.
(iii) Number of aircraft participating are 72.
(iv) The gross area has also increased from 2,50,000 sqm to 2,60,000 sqm.
(v) It is expected that two lakh business visitors will attend the show.
(vi) Seminars by State Governments (Andhra Global CEO’s Conclave
on Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Opportunities in Andhra Pradesh) on 14th February from 1430 hrs onwards, shall be Chaired by the Minister of Civil Aviation Shri Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati. The Guest of Honour will be the Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar. Also attending the Seminar will be the Minister of State for Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences Shri YS Chowdary, the Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, the Defence Secretary, Shri G Mohan Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production), Shri AK Gupta and the Minister of Finance & Planning Commercial Taxes, Legislative Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh Shri Yanamala Ramakrishnudu.
Under the Make in India Initiative the CII, FICCI, PHD shall jointly conduct the following events on 15th February 2017 and the topics are:
(a) “Indian Aerospace : Investor’s Meet” by CII (1000 hrs – 1115 hrs).
(b) “Make in India in Aerospace: Are MSMEs geared for it? – Reflections and the Way Forward” - PHD, CII (1130hrs-1245 hrs).

(x) Confirmation has been received from 30 Countries and the process is still on. In total 65 delegates comprising Ministers of Defence, Service Chiefs, Heads of Department from Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Sudan, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, the UK, USA and Uzbekistan have confirmed their presence.
(xi) There shall be country-wise company participation from 23 countries, including official delegations. A total of 51 countries are participating.
Exhibitors from USA, France, the UK, Russia, Israel, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Ukraine, Singapore, Sweden, Spain, South Africa, Italy, the UAE, South Korea, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, Canada, Australia, Poland and Greece will participate.
Aerobatic teams participating in the show will be the Indian Air Force Sarang Team, the Indian Air Force Surya Kiran Team, the Scandinavian Air Show Team from Sweden and the Evolvkos Aerobatic Team from the UK.

Eyeing a contract for IAF's single-engine fighter jets, Swedish defence giant Saab today said it will set up in India one of the most advanced aircraft production facilities globally if its Gripen E multi-role jet wins the deal.
Top Saab officials said the company has already finalised a blue-print for setting up the hub which will manufacture Gripen E for India and the global market besides having separate facilities to design, develop, modify and enhance new fighters for the future.
The government has already issued Request for Information (RFI) to procure a fleet of single-engine fighters for IAF and US defence form Lockheed Martin will be a major competitor for Saab for the deal.
Lockheed Martin has offered to completely shift a F-16 production line to India for manufacture of the fighters. Kent-Ake Molin, Director of Sales and Marketing of Gripen, projecting Gripen E as the "best" multi-role fighter for IAF, said the aircraft manufacturing hub conceived by Saab for India will be the most modern facility in the world with a major focus on technology transfer.
Saab is also looking at supplying the Indian Navy a naval version of Gripen with advanced features and capablility to take off from aircraft carriers.
Asked whether technology transfer would be difficult as Gripen jet engine has components developed by US defence majors, particularly under Donald Trump's presidency, Molin said there was no reason to worry and concerns regarding the issue are misplaced.
He said India's light combat aircraft has US components and any such issues will be resolved. Saab had offered Gripen for the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft deal which was eventually awarded to French Dassault's Rafale.
Molin said the facility for India would include a dedicated Gripen Design Centre, a major production facility equipped with the latest manufacturing technologies and robotics systems, a radar and sensor centre, final assembly plus test and verification centres, among others.
It will also have repair and overhaul and design services, he said, adding the fighter technology ecosystem would support the full spectrum of production capabilities for India, including parts manufacturing and sub-assembly.
Exuding confidence of winning the deal, Molin said Saab has already held talks with 80-100 companies in India for the mega production facility and that the company has already given a presentation to the government about its plan.
Another Saab official said the company has finalised a deal for maintenance of electronic warfare (EW) suit for Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.
Top Saab executive Tony Ogivy said the firm would incubate partnerships between its global supply chain and Indian suppliers. "Saab would also foster R&D partnerships for next-generation platform, system and sub-system design and development across the industry. To support the Gripen facilities and the wider aerospace industry, Saab will set up a training academy for pilots, technicians and aerospace engineers," said Molin.
He said the company would be in a position to start work on its plans for the facility within a month of getting the contract. Saab has started to identify and evaluate Tier II and Tier III partners from all over India. The firm has already evaluated potential sites in a number of states and has entered into discussions with several state governments.

The first indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) in IOC configuration shall be handed over to the Indian Air Force (IAF), on 14th February during Aero India 2017 at Yelahanka Air base in Bengaluru. This was announced by Chairman DRDO and Secretary Department of Defence (R&D), Dr. S. Christopher while addressing the media in Bengaluru today, during the curtain raiser on DRDO’s participation in Aero India-2017.
The Airborne Surveillance System is a game changer in air warfare. The AEW&C System is a system of systems populated with state-of-the art Active Electronically Scanned Radar, Secondary Surveillance Radar, Electronic and Communication Counter Measures, LOS (Line of Sight) and beyond LOS data link, voice communication system and self protection suite, built on an Emb-145 platform, having an air to air refueling capability to enhance surveillance time. A Complex tactical software has been developed for fusion of information from the sensors, to provide the air situation picture along with intelligence to handle identification/classification threat assessment. Battle management functions are built in house to work as a network centric system of Integrated Air Command & Control System (IACCS) node.
This system has been developed and evaluated through collaborative efforts between DRDO and the IAF, with coordination for certification clearance and quality assurance by CEMILAC and DGAQA. The AEW&C system has undergone all weather and environmental trials and has been accepted by the IAF for induction.

The indigenous project will support the three older Phalcon systems that India has in case of an aerial threat.
Here are 7 salient features of the AEW&C system.
- It is developed by the Center of Airborne Systems in Bengaluru with the help of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
- The project costs a total of Rs 2,400 crore
- The system has been programmed to detect and classify aerial threats in the surveillance area
- It acts as a Command base in support for all Air-Defence operations
- It has been integrated on the Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft
- The system holds a 240-degree coverage radar

Aero India 2017, India’s own biennial international aerospace and defence expo opening in Bengaluru on Tuesday, will be a single point of convergence for representatives of around 50 countries, 549 companies, apex industry chambers and four States. Around two lakh business visitors are expected, the Ministry of Defence said on Friday.
The 11th military air show and exhibition is being held at the Air Force Station Yelahanka from February 14 to 18.
As many as 72 aircraft are participating. Dassault Aviation of France is sending three of its Rafale fighters. This will be their first show since the Ministry ordered 36 of them for the Indian Air Force last year, after several years of suspense over which global brand would join the IAF.
The MoD, which has been hosting the event since 1996 through its arm the Defence Exhibition Organisation, said, “Aero India has become one of the most sought after exhibitions in Asia.”
In 2015, there were 644 companies or exhibitors from 33 countries — 326 foreign and 318 Indian businesses, according to the Ministry.
The total show area has increased to 27,678 sq. m this year over last time’s 24,403 sq. m. The gross area has gone up to 2.6 lakh sq. m from 2.5 lakh sq. m in 2015.
Apart from Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, those expected to be present at the event include, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati; Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Y.S. Chowdary; Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy; Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat; Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa; Defence Secretary G. Mohan Kumar; and Secretary, Defence Production, A.K. Gupta.
Sessions by chambers
The Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the PHD Chamber of Commerce have organised three sessions on February 15 focussing on manufacturing in India and the readiness of small businesses for foraying into aerospace. Swiss, the U.K. and Polish teams have planned business sessions with Indian companies.
Delegates will be coming in from Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Sudan, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, the U.K., the U.S., and Uzbekistan.
Four aerobatic teams
Two Indian, a British and a Scandinavian aerobatic teams are slated to enthral crowds during Aero India next week.
Local pride will be from Indian Air Force’s Sarang helicopter team and popular Surya Kiran team. Surya Kiran had not performed at the 2015 show.
Sweden’s Scandinavian Airshow team and the British Evolvkos Aerobatic Team are the other two that will enthral the crowds.
Dassault Aviation said three Rafales will be present — a single-seat Rafale C and two twin-seat Rafale B. A daily flight solo display will be performed.
U.K. Defence Minister to lead 20-member team
British Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin will lead a 20-member U.K. business delegation. They will focus on tie-ups with Indian companies in defence, aviation and security sections, said an official statement.
“The U.K. and India have much to offer one another in defence: from manufacturing collaboration and simplified export controls, to military cooperation, training and research partnerships.”
The two countries signed a Defence and International Security Partnership in November 2015. With defence exports worth £7.7 billion, the U.K. is the second highest defence exporter.
