State minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Monday said the government would take necessary steps if foreign diplomats cross the line.

The state minister came up with the disclosure in replying to the question of a newsman at his office at the foreign ministry on Monday.

The newsman questioned whether the meeting of Japanese ambassador Iwama Kiminori with the BNP leaders and the chief election commissioner (CEC) is tantamount to intruding on the internal affairs of Bangladesh.

Shahriar Alam replied, "I don’t know the ins and outs [of the meetings with the Japanese ambassador]. An incident occurred six months back. If any foreign ambassador is involved in that kind of activity which we think has crossed the line, we will definitely take actions after taking the issue into consideration. But till now we haven’t noticed anything like that."

Earlier, the Japanese ambassador met the BNP leaders on Sunday at the party’s chairperson office in the capital’s Gulshan. Before that, on Thursday, Iwama Kiminori went to the office of CEC Kazi Habibul Awal to discuss the election-related issues.

Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Iwama Kiminori met BNP’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today and discussed Bangladesh’s next general election and the overall political situation.

Talking to reporters after the meeting at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, the party’s standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that Japan, like other democratic countries, wants to see a free, fair, and acceptable election in Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh’s relations with Japan expanded significantly since we started the free market economy during the BNP government. That is why they (Japan) want that relation to continue even if the government changes,” he said.

Chowdhury, along with the party’s Organising Secretary Shama Obaid, was present at the meeting. They discussed the overall electoral system of Bangladesh and the current human rights situation, he said.

Like other countries, Japan might have concerns about Bangladesh’s next election, human rights situation, rule of law, press freedom, and people’s security, the BNP leader said. “So, they want to understand what is happening in Bangladesh, what is going to happen in the future, and where is Bangladesh headed?” – he said.

Chowdhury, also the foreign affairs committee chairman of BNP, said the Japanese envoy talked about his country’s investment in Bangladesh – both in the private and public sectors.

He said they informed Iwama Kiminori about the country’s overall situation, but he declined to elaborate on it.

The BNP leader said many countries are concerned about the investment atmosphere and the future of Bangladesh. “The situation we’re going through now has created apprehension among countries. So, they’re trying to understand how Bangladesh will be in the future and how the election will be.”

Asked whether Japan will play any role in ensuring a peaceful and fair election in Bangladesh, Chowdhury said the democratic countries have already expressed their goodwill regarding the elections in Bangladesh. “Japan is no different. Everyone wants a free, fair, and acceptable election in Bangladesh.”

He said the new Japanese ambassador has paid a courtesy call on the BNP secretary general. Stating that Bangladesh-Japan friendship is time-tested, the BNP leader said bilaterally, friendly relationship with Japan is above all.

Exactly. In an ideal world, that should always be the case. Foreign ambassadors shouldn't be meddling in internal matters. But this is BAL hypocrisy at display here, given their own history of shady deals with foreign diplomats.

Everywhere in the world, politics is the art of maximising and perpetrating hypocrisy....and seeing how much sticks and how much has to be laundered to then be forgotten about by the victimized masses.

If it is remembered, it will be harnessed and diverted for use against the larger people again.

All to concentrate power and influence among those that enjoy such privilege today to do so, as they never really believe in anything larger than own ego....as ego is all they have known.

Bangladesh is no different.

This is simply the overall nature of power and hubris as it rests in the human psyche to begin with.

The more people become aware of it truly, the more people that have honest gratitude early in life so they do not become sour ingrates to seek out this ego and false pride.... the better chance we have to manage it in some way...but very few people have this from what I have seen, especially the further and further they climb or have already inherited.... and become removed from reality.

Removing oneself from reality is just far easier to do than saddling it with you and addressing it stoically and resolutely for the larger social good...unfortunate but there it is.

This is why politicians and elitists are what they are for the most part.

They seek to conquer others, before conquering themselves.
