Acche din not here yet; is the Modi halo dimming?

For all his fiery stump speeches, Modi has been conspicuously quiet since taking office.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept to power in India’s most resounding election victory in decades, he promised to revive the sluggish economy, rein in rising food prices, tackle corruption and overhaul his predecessor’s lackluster foreign policy.

Many Indians, long accustomed to political stagnation, believed him.

But in recent weeks, critics – and even many supporters – have started to accuse him of squandering his powerful mandate in this boisterous country of 1.3 billion people, where such overwhelming election victories are exceedingly rare.

While acknowledging that Modi only took office in May, they say they see no change, just more of the same.

Despite Modi’s declarations to engage archrival Pakistan – and inviting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration – ties between the two nations remain stuck where they have been for at least a decade.

The recent national budget announcement – despite promises of urgent reforms – failed to provide new direction to India’s listless economy. And Modi’s pledge to clean up the political system has been tainted by the appointment of Amit Shah, a longtime adviser, to a top political post even though he is facing murder charges.

“For a government that promised a new narrative, the adjustment to old ways is striking,” Pratap Bhanu Mehta, who heads the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi, wrote in the Indian Express newspaper recently.

The grumbling can be seen on newspaper opinion pages and heard in the bazaars of New Delhi, where people from all walks of life shop for food. Staples of the Indian kitchen like potatoes and tomatoes continue to cost well over a dollar per kilogram, exorbitant for many people. Under the campaign slogan of “Better Days Ahead,” Modi’s party had promised to control food prices, among other things.

Considering how @Windjammer and his countrymen...oops, sorry...people he cares about while he is sitting in UK think democracy is a low hanging fruit to be plucked out by just stretching your hand, this is not surprising.

Don't you vote in UK ? See how UK works. India works that way. and no, it is not like in Pakistan.

Idiots! Do they think Modi has a magic wand that he swishes and everyone becomes a millionaire overnight?

The congress fuked up the country for 60 years. Can't these douche-bags give him a year at least to set things right?

Most of us Indians seem to have lost our brain cells.
whoaaa you have more likes than your posts........

The only change I have noticed with MODI JEE is his daily change of a new HEADGEAR...:p:

actually there is one change I did notice, he doesn't say stupid things like his colleagues in politics.

I am not that worried about Modi.

what I am afraid of is the goons that rode on the coat tails of Modi and are utter fools themselves.

I don't like the guy, I don't like a lot of his social policies, but for a school drop put, he knows what he is talking about and to his credit, he hasn't given interviews and in the speeches he makes.

He has the right idea for India to grow as an economy, but I think he has gotten a rude awakening from the Delhi bureaucrat babus who are acclimated to mediocrity and treat their departments like fiefdoms. He made mention of that in the Independence day speech.

But I don't like any of his policies, not a fan of BJP's social policies, or their religious conservatism.

I think he is going to get re-elected again. I think it is going to take a while for the Congress to recover from that knockout they received.

Before the elections I did make a prediction that he is going to disappoint his supporters and his detractors. I also did predict to look out for the thugs that is going to ride the Modi wave into power, and then is going to make all sorts of stupid statements.

Looks like I am right :-)

@KalaGhoda, ironically the egg in the face is that it's not me neither my country fellows or anybody else who is pointing fingers at you but that's beyond your comprehension since your focus is elsewhere....I.E Pakistan......speaks volumes about all the tall claims.....doesn't it.

In a democracy PM is the most powerful post a person can hold. But if You mean that Modi needs declare himself as COAS and then usurp power from democratically elected government though a coup. Then yes I agree with you he MUST start another Gujarat in UP.

:) so we both agree that 2-3 months is a very short period to comment. I thought you had some other points while posting the article.
Indians believe in democracy and most likely to give Modi minimum 10 years to show results. This is the general mood in India. We are pretty happy with the way things have gone so far. On talks with Pakistan as mentioned in article, just see the situation in Pakistan.
If Pakistan govt would have taken a soft stand like not talking to Separatists then what would have been reaction in Pakistan? Any progressive talk would have resulted in angry reactions in Pakistan. Sorry, there are already angry reactions there. It would have surely resulted in removal of Nawaz. Now at least he stands a chance to be puppet PM provided IK is not a better puppet.

And there are people here who were claiming as India having facilitated the meetings with the separatists..... none the less, please don't portray that it's all snow white in India....one just has to look back at Musharraf...Vajpayee....era and meetings and how the rug was pulled from under Mr Vajpayee's feet......hell hath and no fury, skeletons rattle in many a cupboards.

@KalaGhoda, and what is your business on PDF......asking useless questions or do you actually have a point.
Plenty of your country fellows come on this forum poking their nose into every thing Pakistan.....well most of them need a little introspection and i am only willing to help.....as for blaming me for all your misdeeds....and as you are in oblivion..sorry to say the likes of Jairam Ramesh and Justice Katju have acutely beaten me to it.

Horse crap article.

He has been doing all the right things. The economy is getting on track, tax collection is improving, subsidy reform and tax reform are on the cards.

He has been doing incremental and steady changes, not fighting all battles at once. He has 60 months to get the job done.

I am quite satisfied at the pace of progress of this Government.
