‘Abused’ in Saudi Arabia, 64 women workers return home to Bangladesh

27 Aug 2019

Sixty-four women domestic workers have returned home to Bangladesh amid allegations of sexual harassment and torture against their employers in Saudi Arabia.

The workers who took refuge in the ‘safe home’ operated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh, were sent home on Monday, said First Secretary Mohammed Asaduzzaman.

They were sent back to Bangladesh as they were ‘willing’ to return home, he said.

The domestic workers, who used to work in different cities in Saudi Arabia, reached the Dhaka airport on Monday night. Officials of the expatriates welfare and overseas employment ministry received them.

All the workers brought allegations of sexual harassment and physical abuse against their employers in Saudi Arabia. Most of them returned before their term ended.

Bangladesh began to send women workers following a contract with Saudi Arabia in 2015. It sent almost 200,000 women workers to the conservative Muslim country over the past five years.

The country was likely to send domestic workers to Saudi Arabia in 2011 which was never successful as no women workers were willing to migrate to Saudi Arabia after the Human Rights Watch reported ‘physical and mental torture’ on domestic workers in Saudi Arabia in 2010, interviewing 150 domestic workers from Indonesia, Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The Bangladesh government has been denying the complaints of the women workers being tortured in the kingdom.

After visiting Saudi Arabia, a parliamentary committee cited language barrier, homesickness and a lack of Bangladeshi foods as the main reasons for the workers to return home.

Lazy Muslim nations thats why men and women have big belly as soon as they cross 30s and are physically unfit
People think its obligatory to hire servant if they have money and treat servants like untouchable ..hiring maids is becoming common even in middle class as well..Women stay at home but still hire others poor woman to do basic cleaning

Yup...they want mansions and maids but know not the basic rights! then they point at another for something many of their own might be doing as well?

Whilst that maybe true, but this is totally irrelevant in this context, as ProudPakistaniGuy comment did not say anything to do with Pakistanis hypocrisy. I apologize in advance if I'm wrong, but the way I see your comment is that your either directing at 'someone' as our French colleagues would say 'moi' and/or your trying to get Lawrence of Arabia's attention... brownie points?

I hope I don't come across as being too forward, for I see we becoming of best of friends in the pending future.

P.s I Called off the strikes, as I didn't want to jeopardise our professional relationship.

Why send these women to Saudi?

Create opportunities in your own country.

No you cant …….it is impossible… You will find these(domestic) workers in UK and USA ,,,, they have different names ….These Low wage servants get abuses in western world too. if not physical but then surly mental abuses …… Just look around you your one flag show you live in UK. ……. Don't buy these types of news that much ……… 64 out of 1000s is very small number(I am also against this) but good and bad people live every were. I am sure more local domestic worker get all types of abuses in BD locally …… Just like in Pakistan and india……

Yes it is just sheer greed in action.

There are plenty of opportunities in BD for work for women but they can earn more money in Saudi.

I was aiming at both and every other person who fits the scenario

I think people need to stop sending their daughters or wives or sisters thousands of miles away to work. It puts women in a vulnerable situation as seen here.

Also arabs seriously need to tone down on living like this. Oils made them rich but also weak. Some of them are too used to luxurious lifestyles and obesity is rampant. When you live in a volatile region and have an enemy (Iran) surrounding you on multiple fronts, it's not a smart idea to live this way.

There is a huge body of laws in UK that prevents such abuse and punishes severely when these laws are broken. You cannot treat domestic workers as they would be in in the middle east or the subcontinent.
Minimum pay . free health and education. Council housing and a body of legislation with free legal aid guards against abuses in the west

It is deeply saddening that there are defenders of these animals and blaming everyone but the perpetrators. Has the love of Arab money so seeped and debased the morals and ethics of the Ummah lovers that even simple humanity is too much to expect from them ?
