About 130 PKK members killed in past four months

About 130 members of an outlawed terrorist group have been killed since March in military operations in Turkey and neighboring Iraq, where the terrorists take refuge, a Turkish military official said Friday.

The Turkish military also said it expects an increase in the frequency of attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is labeled a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

More than 100 were killed in air raids in the Hakurk area on May 20, Turkish Maj. Gen. Fahri Kır said Friday. He said another 20 PKK members were killed in northern Iraq this week. The military is cooperating with the U.S. on intelligence to locate PKK members.

The latest reported clash took place late Thursday on a road linking the province of Gümüşhane to neighboring Erzincan, Gümüşhane Gov. Enver Salihoğlu told the Anatolia news agency.

A PKK member was killed and two others were captured in the clashes.

The security forces, backed by air cover, continued to sweep the area Friday and the road was closed to traffic, he said.

Gümüşhane is not a region where the PKK is usually active, but officials have said earlier that several attacks in the province in recent years show the group is seeking a foothold there.

TSK warns about terror

The Turkish Armed Forces, or TSK, has warned that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, is likely to increase terrorist activities in the upcoming period.

“The organization [the PKK] is trying to gain attention. Considering this, we expect an increase in its attacks,” said Maj. Fahri Kır, head of TSK’s the Internal Security Operations Department, referring to the intensifying fight against terror.

Kır said in a press conference Friday that they would do everything necessary to protect the nation despite attacks, and that they would fight until the terrorist organization is stopped.

Kır said the terrorist organization has lost 130 members, in addition to those who have surrendered. The organization lost over a hundred members on May 20 during an air raid in Hakurk, while the June 16 attack in Şırnak resulted in 20 casualties.

Eight Turkish soldiers were killed overnight in an attack on an army post by members of an outlawed terrorist group in southeast Turkey, near the border with Iraq, the military said Saturday.

The attack blamed on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, took place at a military post near the city of Şemdinli close to the Iraqi border, and also left 14 soldiers wounded, the military said in an online statement.

The military responded with helicopters and reportedly killed 12 terrorists, the military statement added.

Fighter jets then launched a bombing raid in northern Iraq where the PKK has rear bases, the military said.

On Friday the Turkish military announced that at least 130 members of the PKK had been killed inside Turkey and in an air raid on hideouts in Iraq since violence flared in March. The military had lost 43 personnel.

The military also said it expected the PKK to further intensify and spread its attacks.

The mounting violence in recent months has clouded the government's bid to seek a peaceful end to the 26-year-old conflict.

The conflict with the PKK, considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has claimed more than 45,000 lives since it began in 1984, according to the military.
