A WAR BETWEEN IRAN AND ISRAEL. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME

This article first appeared on the Council on Foreign Relations site.

In the United States, discussions of Iran have for the last few years been mostly about the JCPOA—the nuclear deal negotiated by President Obama.

In the Middle East, things are different.

Keep Up With This Story And More By Subscribing Now

This is because while we have been debating, Iran has been acting. And Israel has been reacting.

Israel has struck sites in Syria one hundred times in the last five years, bombing when it saw an Iranian effort to move high-tech materiel to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Last month Israel bombed the so-called Scientific Studies and Researchers Center in Masyaf, a city in central Syria, a military site where chemical weapons and precision bombs were said to be produced.

Now, there are reports (such as this column by the top Israeli military analyst, Alex Fishman, in the newspaper Yediot Achronot ) that Iran is planning to build a military airfield near Damascus, where the IRGC (Revolutionary Guards) could build up their presence and operate.

And that Iran and the Assad regime are negotiating over giving Iran its own naval pier in the port of Tartus.

And that Iran may actually deploy a division of soldiers in Syria.

Such developments would be unacceptable to Israel, and it will convey this message to Russia and to the United States. Russia’s defense minister will soon visit Israel, after which Israel’s defense minister will visit Washington.

Previous Israeli efforts to get Putin to stop Iran (during Netanyahu’s four visits to Moscow in the last year) have failed, which suggests that Israel will need to do so itself, alone—unless the new Iran policy being debated inside the Trump administration leads the United States to seek ways to stop the steady expansion of Iran’s military presence and influence in the Middle East.

That remains to be seen. Rumors suggest that the Trump administration may label the IRGC a terrorist group, which could open the door to using counter-terrorism authorities to stop its expansion.

Whatever the debate over the JCPOA, there may well be a broader consensus in the administration that Iran’s growing military role in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere in the region must be countered.

Whatever the American conclusion, if Iran does indeed plan to establish a large and permanent military footprint in Syria—complete with permanent naval and air bases and a major ground force—Israel will have fateful decisions to make.

Such an Iranian presence on the Mediterranean and on Israel’s border would change the military balance in the region and fundamentally change Israel’s security situation.

And under the JCPOA as agreed by Obama, remember, limits on Iran’s nuclear program begin to end in only 8 years, Iran may now perfect its ICBM program, and there are no inspections of military sites where further nuclear weapons research may be underway.

As Sen. Tom Cotton said recently, “If Iran doesn’t have a covert nuclear program today, it would be the first time in a generation.”

Israel could be a decade away from a situation where Iran has nuclear weapons and has bases in Syria—and could logically therefore even place nuclear weapons in Syria, just miles from Israel’s border.

Fishman, the dean of Israel’s military correspondents, writes that “If the Israeli diplomatic move fails to bear fruit, we [Israel] are headed toward a conflict with the Iranians.”

That conclusion, and the Iranian moves that make it a growing possibility, should be on the minds of Trump administration officials as they contemplate a new policy toward Iran’s ceaseless drive for power in the Middle East.

Elliott Abrams is senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, DC. He served as deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor in the administration of President George W. Bush, where he supervised U.S. policy in the Middle East for the White House.

Note that the source is biased but says about what Nethanyahu told Lavrov during his visit to Tel Aviv.

.
we dont need a war to make you stop with your peacfull project

.
LOL israel would DESTROY iran and not a single country would come to your aid. You have no allies and you're military flies 1960s jets.

.
Can Palestine ask Iran to move their Embassy to Palesine State may be a small military brigade

An other unfortunate truth for Palestinians is that they are surrounded by their Arab brothers. A great unfortunate. Not a joke but being sorrounded by Arabs left them bare-handed.

We help Gaza, Hamas and Islamic Jihad movement of Palestine.

Israel like America only picks fights it knows it can win. Why doesn't it attack Lebanon after it got a thrashing there. Israel knows Iran is not the Arabs. If it comes to war Israel will use it's proxy aka USA to do it's dirty bidding but as Iran is working closely with Russia that option is not on the table in the near future. But then Iranian military tech will be significantly improved

And what about the thousands of Iranian missiles?
What if a handful would hit Israel?

I don't see a problem if Palestine invited Iran to open a Embassy and invited Iranian troops for general protection of the population seems like a very logical step

How about they invited Russia/Iran to help maintain the Sea port and Airports in Palestine

Would Israel object to such a trivial request ?

How about 2 Russian Destroyer ships came together with Turkish floatila with aid and releif for Palestinians , would make sense for Russia/Turkey and Iranian forces to help setup a small permenent base in region

Israel objects to cement going into Gaza and you think it won't object to Iranian troops?

.
Well Iran is not bringing Cement with them , Russia is already in Syria , it would be a small road trip for them.
Iranains will be there with 50,000 Troops in about 2-3 hours

Looks like a minor excercise to setup a permenent base

It would be a great cultural exchange

We can have a exhibition to celebrate all cultures Iranian , Russian and Palestinians and invite honorary guest speaker from Syria Mr Hafiz Ul Assad

Now back in 1800's they used to have this absolutely wonderful exhibition the grand Exhibition

Sure looks amazing

Hard to imagine folks in 1800 had such access to grand celebration

May be Russia and Iran or May be even Turkey can help bring some cement and setup some selling areas in the grand Exhibition , for trade

Just to prove it was real

Those pictures look amazing, are they actual places? And as for your first statement are you talking about the west bank or gaza?

Israel would sustain some damage—no doubt—but iran would suffer catastrophic damage. Israel has Iron Dome and David’s Sling to protect them along while iran has no such thing. Israel flies 5th gen stealth fighters while iran has rebuild F-4s. More over Israel is backed by USA and has the blessing of GCC in a war against iran. Who can Iran count on? Russia won’t help them, neither will cheen. We won’t care either after iran’s treachery over our oil deal.

.
Lol what's wrong with this Iranian guy. Seems he keeps dreaming of destroying/defeating Israel. I know some do have dreams , but they shouldn't let that dream overshadow reality. There will be no war between both sides, baring some dramatic unforseen contingency. Moreover, Israel has been a nuclear power for decades now in the late 60s/early 70s(following the U.S, Soviet Russia,U.K, France and China), having the best airforce(both in terms of their pilots training/experience/skills, adapting their jets with their own technologies/softwares), best air defence system in the region and the most advanced defence industry in the region as well etc etc . So engaging such a country through direct war will not end well for that country.

So there's no turning back, the only feasible solution now is a political/diplomatic one, dreaming of destroying Israel by war is as good as Kim dreaming of destroying the U.S. lol

So the way forward is through negotiation and engaging Israel to reach a political solution IMO.

LOL at the big WOULD. Had this so-called destruction been that easy it would have been accomplished by Jewland long ago. Iran is by no means a walk in the park. Jewland can’t achieve the destruction of Iran. Iran isn’t the Gaza Strip kiddo. Let Jewland first deal with Hamas before thinking about Iran LMAO
