A US-Vietnam Alliance? Not So Fast

The US never had problems to support and allies with dictators who are proto-fascist like the Saudis or Pinochet. The alliance with the Soviets was prior the Cold War and communism was at that time a nuissance and the US prublic was not brainwashed that the Soviets were projected as the "evil". Now after decades of commie bashing indoctrination, it's a completely different matter. After WW2 the US never again allied with a commie country, at best it was an economic co-operation such as trade.

But as brainwashed as you are, you would sell your soul just to please the US such as your propagation of the TPP while more and more people in the EU are getting aware that TIPP will be the last stab in the back of ourfreedom and democracy. Since Vietnam does not have either, it wouldn't matter anyway, right? :D
can you tell me how communist is communist VN? surely, VN is ruled by VCP, but in real life you don´t notice a bit. I predict the role of the communism becomes less and less important as VN governement approaches the West.

Let me tell you this:

the vast majority of Vietnamese are not communists. Communism is an invention, a ideology and is alien to Vietnam. first and foremost, the Vietnamese are patriot or nationalist. We love our country.
second, we are sinized and follow confucius´s teachings. Confucius had been the state ideology for 1,000 years. And it has not stopped when communism arrived.
third, nearly all worship ancestors.
yes, last, we can be communist, capitalist, socialist, buddhist, catholic, etc..

even a Vietnamese hardcore communist worships ancestors besides Ho Chi Minh. how do I know it? because I visited some communists at home.

as for TPP, I think it is a great chance for VN exports. We will see how things develop when the pact is in place.

What kind of Alliance ? Does U.S provide many equipments & funds to Vietnam as same as Sino-Vietnam War American gave to China in1980s ?

If Vietnam change their color, or U.S won't grow up another "CHINA" in American geopolitical strategy.

whatever...BUT have you forgotten that it is YOU who seeks confrontation, it is YOU who destabilizes the political system in VN?
you will get what you look for. It is too late now as thing is rolling.

John McCain is a hardcore neocon. he is keen on confrontation, too. like you.

First Vietnam begged Putin to save them from China's spanking. Now they are begging USA but got the answer "not so fast"!

China begged Soviet Russia to protect China from Japan and US. After that China begged USA protect you counter Soviet Union in cold war. China changed her ally so fast.

Which foreign policy is the best for VN?

This question is very important. Therefore, it must be calculated for future scenario.
Let's do some calculation.

If VN do align with US. Is this for peace and prosperity?
If VN align with China. Is this for peace and prosperity?
How can we, small nations of S.E.A, be able to navigate through east & west wind?

Forget about it. If those viets are capable of making this kind of thinking, they will not be a backward country like it is now.

They have a talent of serving as cannon fodder for others.

About 1000 ex- Japanese soldiers was in Indonesia side fighting with us when we fought Dutch and British in our Independence war (1945-1951), including Madokafc grandfather/or great-grandfather. As well as 500 Pakistani/Indian Muslim.

Our soldiers at that time was PETA, 40.000 Javanese and 30..000 Sumatran. PETA get military training from Japan Military.

@Nihonjin1051

Impressive. Really. I'm glad that they were able to help the Indonesian fight for independence against European Imperialism --the Dutch.

Ms. @madokafc 's grandfather is to be honored. For service to Japan and our Emperor -- and then for serving in the cause of Indonesia. True warrior spirit. Reminds me of the fabled story of the ronins who fought for Lord Asano. Fighting against oppression.

:agree:

Why do you Chinese members here care about Vietnam? Gee, I wish Vietnam align with the U.S. and then get embroiled in big power politics. A small nation sitting next to a hostile bigger nation is always not a good idea. But Vietnam is an exceptionally aggressive country, so if they want to choose this path, let them be. Maybe Chinese military should then fight a proxy war to test their capabilities, lol. Joking!

Technically you are correct, just let them be, test what the best they can do, you will know all their cards.

Vietnam is not Ukraine, is more like Isreal. It can deliver a heavy blow to China. Both U.S. and Japan see this, they also see U.S. Russia will likely lean toward Vietnam or stay neutral in this conflict so they publicly pimp Vietnam up to deter China expansion to SEA.

China is worry now. That can see via their recent action why they withdrew their oil rig and at same time free 12 Vietnamese fishermen.

Vietnam is not a triumph card for the US, but a second tier cannon fodder at the best.

You guys have to understand your true position in this proxy war game.

I cannot help but marvel at the shear diplomatic maneuvering of the United States just within the past 2 years. In the 90s it was even speculated of the inability of VietNam to open to the West due to the historical conflict with the United States and the social and political ramifications that entailed. With Viet Nam's rather principal relationship with the Soviet Union and after the former collapsed, eventually with Russia -- it was almost nebulous to consider a cooperative plan with Viet Nam. But how have things changed.

China's overbearing stance in terms of territoriality in South China Seas have catalyzed the nations in South East Asia to establish greater rapport and cooperation with the United States. Washington owes the success of its 'Pivot' calculus to China, ironically. As China's own regional policy has complemented the United States' own.

I am impressed, i must say. Clever, clever, clever...Joe.

To be honest, let us give the Vietnamese their due. They have been effective in defeating foreign expeditionary forces into their territory. In recent history: French, American, Chinese.

Let us not forget their successful intervention in Cambodia, resulting in toppling of Pol Pot and his CCP-backed Khmer Rouge, and establishing a Pro-Viet Nam government to this day led by Hun Sen.

It is foolish and warranted to deny the Viet Namese' military capability. Especially in defensive campaign, and limited offensives.
