A US Navy With Only 8 Carriers?

The US is currently spending over 4% of GDP on 'defense'.

What is wrong with her?
Wrong? Talk about yourselves first before advising others. The Chinese government's published 2012 military budget is about US$106.4 billion, the second largest in the world behind the US and up about 11.2% from 2011. That translates to almost 3% of your GDP!

So what are you bellyaching about? Let the Americans sort out their own problems. They don't need advice, especially coming from the Hans! :P

Not really true.
Russia - a country of continental and not insular like the United States. For the Russian fleet - is secondary. While the U.S. aircraft carriers to hold all of their empire.

Can you post some pics of the Russian aircraft carrier?

Even with 8 carriers, they will remain unchallenged for a reasonably long time in all the seas.

PLAN might make tall claims and make ships but getting used to a carrier-based fighting force is not easy and Americans are ace in that.

I like Russia's approach though. Massive submarine fleet, one carrier operating, one being developed and plan to have only two operational at all times while subs and massive nuclear-powered battle cruisers take out the enemies.

If Pyotr Veliky had a runway, it could have been called a small aircraft carrier.

That ship is massive.

I am 100% sure that if US tries to sell their 11 Austin class LPDs and 5 Tarawa class LHDs to India then they will gain some money to maintain their fleet and to build newer LPDs and LHDs too.

So IN will get:
12 Austin class LPDs
5 Tarawa class LHDs

That can really pose a bigger threat to any enemy on the Indian ocean(like China).

Indian cannot afford to buy them, man them, equip them or maintain them. Also, India does not have an operational naval base large enough to accommodate so many large ships.

Very amusing discussion ...... To be frank maintaining aircraft carriers is no joke because with it comes a fleet which secures this ship alone ..... so actually u need to have a raise a full battle group to run one Carrier.... I agree with comments that, it is not in the interest of any nation to maintain such numbers if ur requirements are for the self defence... but if the future outlook is offensive ... then may be....

But we see now what happens when nations (not nation goto wars) even super powers such as US of A (A doesnot stand for America) ... an open example ... and previously USSR..... and in near future to become US of A...... ;)

That being said, we don't need it either.

We just have two major theatres of operation: IOR/Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

What would we do with so many carriers?

It is a waste of taxpayers money and a show-off.

We are not in a carrier building race and neither want to.

LHDs and LPDs are not carriers.

106.4 billion / 8250 billion equates to 3%, Indian maths?

lph/lpd do not pose a threat to enemies in the Indian Ocean: the are not antiship or antisubmarine units, they haul and put troops ashore.

I would still prefer that Indians and other people from developing countries should be hired by US and EU countries to scrap there older equipment in their own countries.

Also IN should look towards buying some new equipments:
4 LHDs
4 LPDs

From US and EU.

The 100 million dollar question to US citizens should be " Why in the world US need to have even 8 carriers?' Even 8 are too many. They can do with 3 carriers and put the remaining in reserve. :disagree:

It is well explained in the article, I believe, why 4 is a minimum
