Today is his Birth anniversary, he is my favorite and belong to my home town khandwa. He was the most versatile artist in India. This article summed up him pretty well.
Entertainment Desk: Bollywood is paying its tribute to the legendary playback singer Kishore Kumar on his 82nd Birthday on Thursday. No other artist like Kishore had reached the pinnacle as an actor, producer, lyricist, and composer apart from singing.
Even after his departure from the world, Kishore da still rules many hearts whether it is a 15 years old or a 60 years old man. He was the only singer, who had offered a kind of variety in music.
Kishore da had come to Cine city Mumbai to be an actor, but he gained more popularity as a playback singer. He ruled the industry from 1946 to 1987.
He has sung in many Indian languages including Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Odia. He holds the record for winning the Filmfare Awards for 8 times.
Kishore da was born in a Bengali Brahmin Ganguly family on August 4, 1929, in Khandwa, Central Provinces and Berar (now in Madhya Pradesh). His parents had kept his name as Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhya) was a lawyer. His mother Gouri Devi was a house wife. He was the youngest of four siblings Ashok Kumar, Sati Devi and Anoop Kumar.
To be a singer, he had not taken any formal training in music. Singing appeared as a blessing or a born instinct for Kishore. He was inspired by singer-actor Kundan Lal Saigal, whom he considered his guru and followed his style.
Abhas Kumar Ganguly is known as Kishore Kumar after he came to Mumbai to start his career as an actor. His brother Ashok Kumar was ruling the industry with his excellent acting capabilities.
He started his career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies. He appeared as an actor in his first film Shikari (1946) in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role. However, he was not serious to take acting as a career. He appeared as a comic actor in his movies.
He first got a chance to be identified as a playback singer for the song Marne ki duayen kyon mangu in 'Ziddi'.
The credit goes to Music director S D Burman, who had recognised the singing talent in Kishore da. He had insisted him to develop his own style of singing to be a singer. He was impressed to see Kishore was imitating Saigal. Later, Burman recorded with Kishore for Dev Anand's Munimji (1954), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Paying Guest (1957), Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), and Tere Mere Sapne (1971).
Kishore da was romantic at heart as he had married four times. His first wife was Ruma Ghosh. The couple departed their ways after eight years of their marriage in 1958. Then Kishore married the most beautiful lady Madhubala in 1960, who had worked with him in many films including Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958).
Madhubala was suffering from ventricular septal. After her death in 1969, Kishore da married Yogeeta Bali in 1976. Their marriage lasted for only two years and then he tied knot with Leena Chandavarkar. Leena was with him till his last breath. He died on 13 October 1987 at the age of 58. He has two sons, Amit Kumar from Ruma and Sumit Kumar from Leena Chandavarkar.
