I 100% disagree with him that prick shakeel afridi needs to be hanged. By releasing him you are sending a message that its ok to betray your country and the foreign powers can get you out of jail too. Even more important he is a Pakistani national and NOT american! What happens to him can only be decided by Pakistani state.

I suspect this trade will happen at some point, but not yet. It's going to carry much more weight closer to election time.

I suppose it also depends if the woman is a genuine terrorist, or just one of many sold to the US by their enemies as "terrorists". If security forces think she is a genuine threat/problem, she'll say in prison and so will Shakeel Afridi.

The Americans also don't really care for Afridi - again he's someone who might be useful for PR at some point, but considering Trumps demographic; it's unlikely. His whole value is over represented by the right wing press. He's a used asset, disposed of.

No it's not - it's excellent politics.

The vast majority of Pakistani awam consider Afia Siddiqui as some sort of innocent woman who was suddenly kidnapped and sold to the Americans one day. I personally think there is something more to it - but the case against her is completely fake and she is in prison on false charges.

To suggest the chance of an exchange that nobody is really interested in apart from ultra-conservatives on both sides, allows him to have the cake of being seen to do something, without actually having to do it.

In that one comment he;
- Declared Afridi a spy, not a doctor. He later on talked about Afridi working as a spy for an NGO as a reason why NGO's are being cracked down on.
- In America, on Fox news, declared Afia Siddiqui an innocent woman.
- Put Pakistan on parity by asking for something equal in exchange .

i believe in reality not myths, so what IK is more interested in appeasing common people who apparently are more ignorant and emotional in most of the affairs then taking defense matters seriously? he is trying to set precedence.

In an "ideal world" no one can disagree.

In the "real world" every issue has its life and then you need to move on.

About 12 to 15 years ago there was a spat between China and US.
A Chinese fighter pilot aggressively intercepted the US spy plane and touched its wing with the wing of spy plane in air.
The US spy plane spiralled down but landed inside China.

There was a lot of usual chest thumping then, but the cool headed Chinese leader gave its administration 2-weeks to settle the issue.

I think this could be a way of shutting up the Americans on the Dr Shakeel Afridi issue, they will not trade Dr Afia. If so then this is a chess move.
