What's new

A small victory for China for now....

Is everyone here from the south of China? I thought there'd be at least a few northerners here.

Beijing is still my favourite city, pollution and all. One of my early childhood memories are of getting up early in the morning to buy Douzhi and Youtiao.

I'm from Hong Kong, my ancestors came from Guangdong. We are Hakka (客家人) actually so maybe my family originated from the North of China a long time ago.

My favourite Chinese cities are Bejing and Shanghai, and HK too of course.

I love Youtiao as well and Zhaliang especially, it's the best breakfast!

I was going to say, this skews the income dramatically upward.

That is nuts... you think that if you worked in the financial sector, bonuses would become a significant part of your income.

It's nuts indeed, but true. Most people in financial sectors here don't get bonus or get token ones. Only traders or some baraches of investment banks get more, which also depend year from year. So basic salary level matters. Generally speaking there are no rich people in Benelux ( not as many as one can see in USA even % wise or in HK ) and no poor people either ( except some new immigrants from Morocco, Turkey, etc.). Everyone is about the same here, typical socialist?

Hey, I am from Beijing too! :smitten:

I was born there and studied in Jin Shan School until I was 7 before moved to Europe. I still can remember roughly how I went to school every morning following a part of Forbidden City walls and Jin Shan Park :smitten:

My grandparents though are from the south China: 2 from Shanghai, 2 from Suzhou.

Edit: My dad told me ( I forgot it almost completely) that at a time I held All Time Records of Jin Shan School within my age group on both 100m Sprint and Long Jump, receving 2 gold medals (must be fake and can't find them nowhere now). I wonder my records have been broken or not...:smitten:

Bro, I am from Shanghai. Have you watched the TV Drama “蜗居”. Damn too much pressure of living in that city. I feel it would soon become a second Tokyo with a very high rate of suicidal people. :hitwall:

of course, i watched it last year and failed a test because of it. housing prices are ridiculous in the coast but inland is still fine, in wuhan the industrial sector near 光谷 still has relatively cheap houses though its 3 hours from the city center. 汉阳 is also not bad. my house near 南胡 was farmland 10 years ago. the prices in the city center, of course, are also sky-high for our incomes.

after going to shanghai my feelings is its nice but not the place for me. far too high pressure, and i think it looks like a 2nd tokyo already. my cousin who worked there for 15 years already refers to me as "外地人“ and says "其实,上海人说外地人的素质很低有一定的道理“... nice to visit and probably to make money though.

I have to use google translate for deciphering that post. Is there any hidden logic behind it

I like Beijing too, mainly because there are so many small eateries around the north part of the city (its a Singaporean thing). Nothing I like better then to get a late supper and few bottles of Yanjing Beer

That said Shanghai is fantastic unfotunately the weather when I went was pretty hot. Have to make plans to visit again and after the expo :D
